...If I got one I would be looking for one that would give me great take off and an exceptional top end( I wouldn't go over 80 anyways, If that even). Im planning on getting the tranny rebuilt in the spring, getting a good 350 or finding one that needs rebuilt(to stock specs), and swap the 231 for the 350. What gear ratio should I run, and will it off-set my speedo any? Thanks

    Cody,
Any change in either gear ratio or tire diameter will make your speedo read differently. A good all-around gear for a street driven car would be something like a 3.42.

Even if you were racing and pulled 100 mph traps in the 1/4 mile, you can get away with a 3.42 gear and 26" tall tire and keep the rpm's in a reasonable range.

The taller rear tire you use, the more it takes away from the gear ratio. Running a 26" tall tire with a 3.42 rear will have you spinning more rpm's at a given speed than running 28" tall tires. Those are all things to keep in mind.

If you don't plan on driving far distances, or cruizing at highway speeds, you could get away with a 3.73-3.90. otherwise 3.42 is the way to go. A good running Buick 350 wouldn't really need a very steep gear, but it certainly wouldn't hurt. :Brow:

Probably a 3:42 it will be. I want to use it as a daily driver car, and yet have some power and reliability as well. Thanks.

Although if it offsets my speedo I will want to get it fixed, and the question is can the speedo be set to read the unit or will I have to get an aftermarket to get it to read right?

there is a plastic gear in the transmission that you'd change out to adjust the speed of your speedo. it's where your speedo cable goes in to the trans (back toward the drive shaft half near the driveshaft/tranny connection)
