Looks like that one is from a 1974 Buick. The rebuilder "builts" for nascar so that makes it well worth it.
I expect the extra characters are from a rebuilder as a warranty code or something. Never seen it on a factory carb.
Is there a problem with the one you have now? I just got a good spare core 7044240 for $20 yesterday.. Keep Searching, deals are to be had.. I'll probably never use it, but it does look good on my spare parts shelf... A good fresh kit from http://www.cliffshighperformance.com/, when you need it... Not to sure I would want to sit a rebuilt carb as a spare on my shelf for how ever many years and expect it to perform after all the rubber part have had a chance to dry out and harden over time... Even the gas/alcohol percentage will have changed again by then requiring even more updated viton parts... Just my opinion tho.... EDIT: the extra characters are the factory date code (2573) 257 day of '73
From what I can see in the pics, the carb for sale probably came from one of the companies who sell "remanufactured" units. They bead blast or acid dip the castings and parts, so they can oxidize, rust and corrode under your hood. I also see non-standard fasteners, and a couple of aluminum plugs driven into the rear of the airhorn, non-slashed vent tube, etc, indicating it is probably not the original one from that carburetor. If you are looking for a "spare", a "virgin" core all covered with grease and gunk would be a better option, IMHO......Cliff
Thamk you all for the advice. I am waiting on your book Cliff, so maybe I will be better able to KNOW what I'm looking at. Soon I hope to have built a spare to have for the Riv. When I get a good core and other items I will post a "build" thread. Hope I can do it!?!?!?!?!
There is a number missing there but looks like a 74 carb. The KA is another code maybe build plant. The build date is there as well 257 day of 1973.
"There you go- grease, second only to Cosmoline for protecting metal!" PRECISELY! More often than not, the very best cores are the worst looking ones, and usually the cheapest as well! Like most other things with this hobby. Best to build an original unit from scratch, than to correct all the issues and problems from the butchering done to the part by someone before you. In most cases (at least when it comes to engines and Q-jets), when I here the words "rebuilt", I run immediately in the opposite direction!.......Cliff
