What tires are recommended for a 68 Skylark Custom convertible with side skirts? Little puzzled and want to get the right tires. Excuse the mess!

All depends on what rim you will be putting them on

Using the factory Buick rims. The tires on the car now are junk and need to be replaced. The current tires are P205/75 R14. Need to know what will fit in the inner wheel well.

14" rims restrict your tire size choices. Stepping up to 15" Buick wheels gives you more choices. The 68-69 cars have different back spacing requirements though. If you can afford new wheels, that would be what I recommend. If not, I believe your best bet would be a P225/70R14. That would be a G70-14. It is only 20mm wider than your current tires, less than an inch. See what some of the 68-69 guys say.

I put BFG P245R60-15s on my '68, with the Buick Sport Wheels. They clear everything. I did trim the rear wheel well sheet metal up to the weld, close to the wheel opening molding, as I have been known to indulge in a little hard cornering from time to time, and don't want to take any chances.

Got a chance to pick on up a set of 205 78 r15 tires and rim and a decent price. Can you tell me if they will fit?

    Thanks,
    Jason

If the wheels fit the studs, I would say yes. That's a pretty skinny tire. What is the backspacing? I'd almost guarantee no rubbing with that setup, unless the offset is really strange.

FWIW, a 9" slick on a 15x8 sport wheel (don't know the backspace) fits great on a 68 GS. It never had skirts so there's no attaching hardware in the way. On 14" wheels a 225/70/14 has plenty of room; on 15s a 245/60/15 has fat finger clearance. they won't rub but you'll cut your knuckles trying to wash the tire. (again, this is on a GS without skirt hanger parts.)
