What to look out for in buying a 'vert

    Greetings,

I'm considering looking into buying a convertible and have absolutey no idea if there are any prone "problem" areas to be concerned about before buying - other than the obvious! :puzzled:

I'm considering a '67. Are there specific areas prone to rust or other characteristics of the top/mechanism that I should be especially concerned about?

    Thanks!

I don't know where or how a '67 drains water, but in my '70, the drains run down the forward part of the rear quarter, in front of the rear wheel. There is a drain hole inside, by the frame.

These can get plugged with debris.

I suggest taking off the vent in the door frame and shining a flashlight in there.

Also, inspect the top mechanism. Perversely, tops that see regular use tend to be trouble free. Tops that haven't seen use in years can have real problems.

Check out the pump and the lines. If bluish crystals are in the lines, the power top won't work (I assume it's power). Check the hydraulic rams for rust- a rusty arm can rip the seals on the ram and then trouble starts.

Is it a '67 Skylark? Sharp car, I like the '67 as much as the '70. Wing windows in the doors are cool

Thanks for the info. I'll be paying attention to those areas - and yep, I'm looking into the Skylark variety.

    Thanks again,

There is a plastic drain that goes around the back to the top, they always crack and then the water gets in your trunk and under rear seat. Check for rust in those areas especially, lower rear quarters, etc.

Header on top front of top assemby tends to rust as well, should be solid under the fabric roof cover.

Biggest thing is that ragtops leak. Check floors, dash corners, anywhere water might pool if the water gets past the top.

    Later
    Tim
