Discussion in 'Classic Buicks' started by thefireball451, Mar 26, 2012.

  1. My 1961 Buick Lesabre with 12k original miles due for a transmission fluid change for the first time having just passed 12K miles for the first, now I'm pondering what type of fluid should be used ?
Been told DEXRON 3 and DEXTRON 6 anyone have some info on this one? :eek2:

Nice car, I've been using Dextron 3 in mine as all of the stuff I read said to use it. So far, so good, but I haven't really driven it that much yet. My car has around 60K on it and I'm sure it is due for a change as well. HTH

The original fluid was type A. I don't believe that this is available any longer. Dexron 3 should be fine.

John I think you are right, I haven't seen any 'A' in long while. I've been using Dexron 3 for that same long while.

Yeah, I know...I used to work in a service station back in the early 80s when I was a kid and there was this one idiot who thought he could beef up his slippery older transmission (a Dynaflow with a badly adjusted stator) by putting in the thicker Type F; - and then he wondered why it starts to smoke and slip...so he brings us this thing and actually expected us to fix it...the problem was in those days there was no one in the Edmonton area that could fix a Dynaflow anymore, and there were no parts; - so the car wound up getting junked. I just got a nice timing case off of it last year before the wrecker crushed it. It was a 62 Electra...nice car too.

I never worked on cars professionally. But, Dad used to have so many cars we used to keep a stock of oil and transmission fluids for Fords , Gms , and Chryslers. He was always very careful to use the correct fluid for each car.
