Welcome to the board! Is your car a hardtop or sedan? I've had 3 four-door sedans, and I wish I still had them all.

As I'm sure you know, these are great highway cars that can easily be made to run some serious numbers as well.

Are you looking to keep the 350 or go 455? Either way, there are many inexpensive ways to get the best bang for your buck.

Timing and exhaust is where I would start.

its a 4 door hard top with 2 1/2 inch straight pipe with glasspacks and i just threw a 600 performer edelbrock on it 1406...i have a detonation prob at high loads or punching it but it does alright...i plan on rbuilding the stock 350...heads,intake,timing but not sure what to get...im trying to get the best bang for the buck without removing the cam and pistons...top end mild build maybe torque convertor shift kit...but not sure the combo i should use, like valve springs, stall speed, timing set,im new to this...im mechanicly inclined but without the technicle terminology...im hoping to learn more from the pro's here on the site...so i read and read and read some more so i can put it all together by next year....any advice on the timing issue...i do have a slight detonation issue on hard loads but i need it broken down in leimans terms for the preschooler in me....

silly ??? on the left of the stock intake of the 350 4B there is a plate held down by three bolts with a lever sticking out of it...it was attached to the old rochester but had to be pushed aside when i put the edelbrock carb on...i assumed it was the vacuum choke lever but not sure...what the hell is it and is it important...it is pushed down to fit the carb on...i hope it aint ****ing anything up without me knowing...

thats what i figure, and thats what i did...the only thing is it sits naturally in the up poistion and because th shape of the carb it rests on top of it and pushes it into the down position...i imediatly noticed a performance difference when i did the carb swap so i have no reference for performance change and i really dont want to bend the rod to release it...i was just going to leave it alone untill i swapped out the intake for a new dual plane...
im running a manual choke cable...my carb was bought second hand and didnt have the electric choke setup attached, but it would be nice to have...

    Food for thought:

The original quadrajet on your car was 750 CFM. If you are stuck on keeping the Edelbrock, find a 750. But on the other hand, the quadrajet is a great carb if it is built and tuned right. It will outperform the Edelbrock on mileage, as well...as long as you don't drive with your foot to the floor all the time.

ya i was getting no response from the qjet and horible gas millage to boot when i bought it...instead of the rebuild i opted to buy the 600 from a freind for next to nothing...instant change in perf.,and millage for the 50 bucks i put into it...i was going to opt for a webber for the rebuild...im trying to get ideas, keep it running for the summer, accumulate the upgrades before winter, and then tear into it... just bought this buick for 700 bucks in feb...saw it and just had to have it,and been running it ever since...

with all the things i wanna do it would be foolish to not get a cam while the engine is out...to hell with it...full rebuild it is...

Do your research on engine combos before you start rattling off part numbers to TA or other Buick engine parts vendors. It's very important to get it right, otherwise you will be disappointed with your build.

You can also call TA Performance and get tech help on what you should be getting, based on your intentions to drive the car.
