Where is the air vent on a '56 Buick?

I need to close the air vent on the driver's side but the pull handle thing under the dash doesn't appear to be connected to it anymore. I tried following the cable under the dash but I couldn't see where it was attached to anything. I couldn't find anything on this in the factory shop manual. My question is how can I close it manually since I don't want cold air coming in over the winter. I didn't see anything on the firewall so where is the vent itself and how can I close it?

    there's a flapper 8"+/- wide x 2"+/-high ,
above the steering column on the firewall
you can't see it from the engine side, it's behind the plenum

there's a twin on the passenger side

maybe you can push it closed.

I looked under the dash and didn't see anything that looked like an air vent. Is this black thing the plenum? Can I remove it and jam some rags in there to block the air flow into the car? If you have a better idea please let me know what it is. Thanks....

    That is the plenum.
The vent is located at the lower portion of the plenum.
If you remove it, you'll see the front side of the vent. Maybe removing the plenum, you can then close the vent
Note the drain tubes at the bottom of the plenum. You should take care not to block the drain tubes.

Trying to think why you can't see the vent...There may be some insulation fallen down over the vent.

I removed the plenum and couldn't get the vent to close all the way so I jammed a few rags in there. Thanks for the help....

I'm glad you got that done.
Some penetrating oil on the flapper bearing will be in order , come springtime.
