According to the User Manual that came with the car its between the rear branches of the exhaust manifold of the right side of the car. I cant seem to find it. Any help would be appreciated.

    thanks Pinder

Check the other side (passenger). The original engine in my GS is stamped on that side between the two rear manifold branches. Mine are stamped very lightly but can be seen at the right angle. A new guy on the line or a hungover worker must have stamped mine:Dou:

They are on the driver's side, or left hand side of the car in the location specified, and should match the VIN of the car if it's an original engine.
The engine number is stamped between the front branches, and the production code is at the rear, on the same side. :TU:

Thanks Gents. I will head out into the freezing garage now to see if I can see it.

Found some numbers on the Driver side. but only 3 digits 185 by dip stick. On the same side between front manifold branches there is a number that is impossible to read. This is a 1967 so I think the engine is from a newer Riv maybe 69 as the 1967 I think should have stamped on the passenger side. :ball:

. . . double check your findings Pinder :Do No:

In '68, the 430 engine serial number is on the left side at the front of the engine, (...same as VIN), 8Hxxxxxx, and the production code number is at the rear.
Usually two letters (...engine prefix code), followed by 3 numbers (...date code).

I'm pretty sure the same would apply to your '67, which was the first year for the Buick 430 engine :TU:

Ok I will do some more investigating. Any ideas on how to make the VIN number show up clearer? maybe try rubbing chalk. the 185 code is all i can read . I dont see any other letters at the front.

    THanks for your help.

Yes it should be on that side but mistakes happen, my '68 400 engine is living proof that they can get stamped in the wrong location. My VIN is stamped very, very lightly on the rear passenger side. My production code was stamped in the front right side:Dou: I know its not a restamp, just weird.:Dou: I used yellow paint rubbed over the stamping and then wiped it off leaving the paint in the recess of the stamp, it helped to make it stand out a little better but it was still very difficult to get a photo of it.

I believe the '67 codes were stamped on the passenger side.

    For 1968
    Production code: PD = 430
    Production code PR = 400

I had a '68 GS400 coupe that was stamped "PDR" and had 430 decals under the 400 decals from the factory:Dou: I seem to find the strange ones:rolleyes:

I'm sure there are probably a lot of 'untold' production line stories that differ from what the book sez it should be Mike !! :Do No:

Pinder try some course steel wool, an SOS pad, or emery cloth with some laquer thinners, or solvent, to cut the grime, along with a bright light, to make those numbers more visible. :TU:

Thanks Guys for the suggestion. so Found out some more info. I was able to find the engine code. Here is what i have learnt.

    1. The engine is from a 1969 car based on the RD 185 engine code i found on the Drivers side of the car. I dont know what the 185 is but the RD suggest a 1969 year.

    2. There is a vin / Serial number on the drivers side but its difficult to read. Maybe former owner attempted to make it difficult to read. Anycase no point trying to read that as it wont match the body which is a 1967 GS riv. Whoever did the engine swap did a good job from what I can se by doing it and keeping from ruining the flexible material on the wheel arches.

    3. So at least I now know what I'm dealing with.

    Really appreciate everyones responses.:TU:

    Best Regards, Pinder

Also, Reason i could not find the two character code before next to the 185 was that it was stamped about half inch to the left and half inch higher than the 185 number. it was almost under the heads.
