Getting ready to repaint my 1936 Buick. Which paint to use--acrylic enamel, acrylic laquer or urethane basecoat and clear. Do not want to have problems in future with orange peel, weathering altho car will not be in weather. Seems as if I should go basecoat/clearcoat as system now better than when car produced. I'm going original on car but the paint I think I'm willing to upgrade. Thoughts, suggestions---Ideas on where to buy paint. I will be using original color--Ballue Brown. Thanks in advance. Rodl
Look in the phone book for a auto body supply store in your area. Modern urethanes are more durable than the old lacquer or enamel-based paints. If it isn't a metallic color, you can save some $$ and use a single-stage urethane....it sprays glossy and will not require a clear coat. A 2 stage is also known as basecoat-clearcoat..... the basecoat sprays with no gloss, and requires a clear top coat for gloss and durability. If you are spraying the paint yourself, you need the proper safety gear as the modern urethanes are very hazardous.
Thanks for replies. Not going to spray outside myself. Will use acrylic enamel for interior and have decided to use bc/cc for exterior. Thought about single stage urethane but decided from durability standpoint would go bc/cc. Thanks Rod
Id so go fancy under your going black. Nothing can replicate that old time hand rubbed black lacquer that can get 30miles deep. If ya got SherwinWilliams paint store, they will have one just auto paint version somewhere in town, hidden, ya never seen it before but its there. We got one and it like a mystical journey with an amnesia spell enchantment when you leave. You only have a sense of where it is. Them places seem to almost hide on purpose as those who know how to find them, give them enough business. They don't want more.
