Which Secondary Rods?

Hey Q Jet racers and street pounders. Which secondary rods and hangers have you settled on? I got my Tomco Q Jet to "hit" fairly well, but am not sure if I am using the best rods for the application. At the very least - please feel free to chime in with your opinion: Long, Medium or short power tips? I am thinking long to get the richer mixture "in" sooner.

Yes, longer power tips start the power mixture earlier. I have BG rods in my John Osborne 7042240, 800 Q-jet. They have a .0397 power tip, and a medium length tip. The AX rods (7033549) have the long tip with the same size(.0397) They are available from www.gmpartsdirect for 9.43/pr

    Great tip, Larry. Thank you!
I am going to look at the letter of the rods I am currently using. So far, I have just been eyeballing different rods for the thin (and long) tips.

Larry- Got my Osborne rebuild back last week. I have the same carb # you're running, which is stock on my '72 Electra. John changed my primary jets from 73 to 74, and the sec rods from CT to BZ. Haven't installed it yet.
I came across a table which shows the differences between the sec rods.
I told John I was upgrading to an HEI (primary jet change?). Anyway, here are my before and after sec jet curves, threw yours on there for comparison.

That's pretty neat. Looks like that AX rod is the one I should try just to see if the earlier fuel makes a difference.

Larry- I have the file at work which lists all the different rod specs, I'll send it out tomorrow. Too many choices, although some are no longer available as I understand it.

That is interesting. One thing left to wonder. How much fuel and how early should it be comming in? I know and understand the basics, but is there a general rule for power tip length? My Q jet book says that "longer tips can be helpful for drag racing because they get the enrichment in sooner" Any thoughts?

If I could continue on this conversation please...

I was looking at some sec. rods to try. I currently have the stock CT rods in there now. I can get some CX rods that are very similar to the BZ rods already mentioned. I also have the chance to get some DX rods as well.

This is my daily driver so I don't want to do anything too extreme. Any suggestions for a street car?

I'd say trial and error. Be aware that going too rich will slow the car down. I just reread an old Hot Rod where they put a SBC 383 in a 66 Chevelle. They tuned the heck out of a 750 double pumper, with accelerator pump cams and shooters, etc. Then they went back to their old 3310, 750 Vac secondary - and picked up 2 tenths! Double pumpers are rich, and obviously this was too rich for the 383 engine combo.

I see a lot of us Buick heads simply going with the richest rods they can find. This might not always be the best choice.

Guess you've got the carb sorted out to your satisfaction since your asking about secondary rods. If you know what size power tip you want to try or letter rods then post it here, I've got some duplicates. Also have a bunch of hangers. Don't you have a G-Tech, you can't rely on seat of the pants for this kind of tuning.

Yeah Dave, I had a great drive to work today. Thanks for all your help. Now I want to see what improvements I can get with the Poston on there.

I thought I had CT rods but I actually have BZ rods. I just bought some CX rods which are about the same thing. :Dou:

I'd like to try some different hangers. I curently have the "K" hanger. What would you suggest/what do you have?

I have the G-tech and a great big church parking lot just down the road from me. :TU:

From what I saw posted the hanger that raises the rods the most is B and I believe they run through M. Anyway near as I can remember that's the way it was posted a while back. I have an H and an I hanger I can let you have. I've also got a pair of CD metering rods you could have if you need them, they have a .059 power tip, measured with a caliper.

I think I'm okay on rods now. The CD rods are close enough to the BZ and CX rods I already have. I wouldn't mind having the hangers though. Let me know what you want and how I can get them.
