Does anyone else do these grilles? One is mostly a repaint. Restored shop painted it black. Thought it would look better. The other is rough. Some repairs already done by previous owner and they used some bad paint that lifted. If not maybe go with a 71 repro.

Restored mine. Lot of hours. Like yours mine was painted w/ lacquer . Had mine Media blasted w/ plastic beads! WOW! took a week to sand w/ 220 . Then primed w/ high build primer. Dry sanded w/320 . Used thick straight paint stick to sand all of the grill. to keep all edges sharp &straight. Then sprayed with rally black (a Sikkens) outer edges of grill painted W/ special effect silver ( a Sikkens)The back side of grill was painted a tan color w/ slight look of greener side of the tan color witch duplicated the plastic used before painted.

To remove the paint from the plastic grilles I use Easy Off oven cleaner. Spray it down and put it in a trash bag overnight. I then pressure wash the paint and oven cleaner off. The grille can be cleaned with a degreaser and then start with repairs and paint. The grilles are made from ABS plastic, and a heavy bodied ABS cement can be used to glue it back together. I also used a little M.E.K. solvent to soften the plastic before glueing.
For paint and primer I used PPG DP epoxy primer and PPG DIU interior paint. The paint used a reactive reducer and does not require a topcoat. The paint was a little expensive but I did not want to have to redo any of my work for paint issues. Grilles take me about 5 hours to tape and paint.
You can use spray cans for a 72 grille since they are black and silver.
