Who Manufactured These Headers?

They came with the car i pulled this drivetrain from for my '68 GS.

they seem to be a no comprimise design as one tube need to be dented to keep from rubbing on the steering shaft. that was with new frame pads and motor mounts installed. the car i took the drivetrain from had a 350 mount on the drivers side to tilt the motor up to clear this problem.

the trans crossmember also had to be modified as the collectors stop right there and the area that is stamped into it to allow the exhaust to run through need enlarged.

i am getting ready for a 4 speed conversion and would like to know whose headers these are and if anyone has encountered clearance problems with the z-bar and linkage.

    thanks for your help

Adam i always thought they may be original M/T's

    That's what I was thinking....

It looks like the collectors are a bit longer on the repros.

    Greg,
Those are Mickey Thompson Super Scavengers Headers. I have them on my 70 GS. They get close to the steering shaft, but don't touch. I have two notches cut out of my crossmember. I need to remove a little more material, because they still touch a little. The MT's are the only headers that have that big box collector. Each primary tube is equal length, they each end at a different place in the collector. They have a very unique sound to them, I love it, but the crossmember clearance bites:laugh:

Larry i do love love the sound as well.

so i assume they were designed with the 4 speed in mind, i would hate to have to change them out for the 4 speed.

Greg, in checking out your pics, I think the headers will clear the clutch linkage. Are they still pretty solid, look like they could go anytime, I've had a set of Kenne-Bell's on the race car rust out, we patched them to get through the rest of a season a couple of years ago, but finally had to replace. Roberta,

they were pretty solid when i put them on this car but time has gone by quickly, doesnt seem like i have had this drivetrain for 7 years.

i see what you mean by looking at the pic.

Greg, mine went up top by the head, hottest spot probably mostly on the drivers side, they were used to start with, and I only paid $20 for them from old Buick Racer Scott Coffman, it was on of those Sunday afternoon's the week of the GS Nationals. I needed headers, as the MT's Wild Bill used for the origami headers for the '66 Wildcat 455 project were trashed from the torque converter incident, geeze that was a long time ago! RV

I used them on my '70 4-speed conv. and they cleared the linkage and z-bar alright. I had the same flat spots on the bottom of the collector flange too. I guess everybody does. If those headers are solid, take 'em off and have 'em Jet-Hot coated. they'll last forever then.

    Or so they say :puzzled:

I had mine Jet-Hot coated when brand new (TA headers) and they came with a lifetime warantee. Well.....they've been back to JetHot once for a re-coating and will go back again the next time I have the motor out. They are showing rust through the coating in certain spots.....

.....and this car lives inside mostly !! It has seen rain when on the road, but still :Do No:

You'd have to spend a good amount of time cleaning those up before they could be coated.

Is it a no rust guarantee?

Or a no rust thru guarantee?:Do No:

Hey Alan, you don't have to clean them up. They do it for you! I also had to send mine back once. I blistered the coating a few years ago. I think the motor ran too lean. They re-coated them for free anyway , even though it wasn't their fault. No problem since.

any idea of the cost and turn around time to clean up and jet coat them?

I don't know if the size matters, but my 2 1/4 inch headers from the racecar cost $250 to do. Smaller headers may be cheaper.

It wasn't cheaper.....I remember they coating cost more than the headers !!! but that was at least 6-7 years ago.

Id say its worth it.....even just so you dont have to pop the hood and look at that rust

.....not that theres anything wrong with that
