Why I Own My Car There have always been Buicks in my family. I owned many Buicks because of thier looks. Buicks were alway a cut above in style. The fact that they were sleepers have always been an added feature.
I own my Stage 1 because of fond childhood memories. I had a neighbor friend whose father and grandfather would buy and store autos. They used to call it "pickling cars". Anyway, at the age of eleven I remember running across the street to see their latest acquisition (back then the dealers would actually deliver the cars to his driveway) a 1970 Datsun 240-Z - I thought it was the coolest car I had ever seen! At least I though it was until several months later they added an additional car to their stable of "pickled cars", you guessed it, a beautiful 1970 Buick GS Stage 1. That was it. I was hooked and knew that someday I would own a Stage 1 of my own. Later in life (about 1981) I became good friends with a mechanic who ran his own shop. He used to store a 71 Black Stage 1 on his lot. As it turned out the car belonged to a good customer of his that did not want to leave the car at his house because he had a teenage son with a lead foot and a spare key. He would leave the Buick at the mechanics garage year round. Eventually, in the late eighties my friend the mechanic purchased the Stage 1. In 1998 I bought the triple black Stage 1 from my friend the mechanic. The original color of the car was Limemist with a black vinyl top and black interior. JW now has Limemist and is restoring her to new. I hope to be driving and showing Limemist in a few months. Thats my story.
None of my reasons were listed First, I was sick of working on my friend's Hondas and Acuras and having them all think they were fast cars (yes i have ricer groopies ) and hearing them talk crap about muslce cars Secondly, It had what i need, a good body, big engine, manual trans, and a 4bbl. Thirdly, i had enough girls tell me that muscle cars and aviators are a great combination
Why Buicks My first Buick was my first hot rod. I found it on the back row of a used car lot here in Tulsa. It was a 69 GS California. Looked at many cars for several days but the Buick was the one that would not get out of my head. Paid 800 bucks for it in 85 and used it for daily transportation untill 89. Still have my 69 and have added two 72 skylarks to the fleet. Daily driver is now a82 Olds cutlass cruser with a Buick 350. I always get looks when I drive my 72 at the drags, many people come by and say a Buick?? more are looking and saying wow great Buick or man I would like to find one of them! Life is good when you drive your Buicks! Mark
o No: I hardly knew it was a buick when I got it. The car that I thought looked cool was the delta 88, but then I stumbled on this one,.
The 3 - B's for me: Big Bold and Beautiful :TU: or Big Block Buick :TU: whichever you choose. I love to drive my Duece on Sunday drives but this year I haven't even got a chance to register it yet because there's not enough time in a day for me. I love to just sit in it these days and fall a . My dad is the main reason for my getting into Buicks that's all we owned. At one time we had over 200+ Buicks in our scrap yard. Then my dad had them CRUSHED :ball:.Mind you this was over 22 years ago. He had no ideal that they would be worth what they are today.
Bought my first Buick in 1982 from my grandmother for $1.00, this is the same Buick my grandfather owned and took me to baseball games in. A 1969 Buick Skylark 350-4 (granddad like to go fast). Sold the car in 1985 cause I needed a truck for work and always said I would own another. :error: Found my 72 Skylark on the side of the road tucked in the back of a trucking company returning from a bid walk for work. Stopped to see it and the guy was amazed I saw it back there. I don't think he was really looking to sell but his wife said it had to go.Took a photo and showed it to my wife and she fell in love with it. That was 3 years and many dollars ago and she still loves it as much as I do.
Or maybe because; I love hearing people tell me stories about what they did with their (usually Mom & Dad's) car (like the one I have) when they were young. Man oh man, some of those stories are quite interesting to say the least. :Brow: :eek2:
My reason isn't on the list either, but I doubt anyone would even think about it. When I was just a young lad, our neighbor had a summer vistor (daughter maybe o No: ) from Tennesee, who had a brand new 64 Skylark. She spent most of the summer up here with her two kids, one of which was my age. Her son, Bobby, and I became good pals that summer, but what I remember most was her car had AIR CONDITIONING. Nobody here in those days had a car with A/C, not even the Caddy and Lincoln owners. I would think of any excuse to go for a ride in that car, and she'd usually oblige. :TU: Too bad my neighbor moved shortly afterward, I never saw them again, but I remembered the car all those years. Fast forward some 35 years, after doing the Ford, Olds, and Mopar thing, to my discovery of Buicks. First was a 69 Electra convert, now sold, then my 64 Skylark convert, and then my 65 GS. It's official, I'm a Buick nut for good.
Because it's different, it was the best Muscle car, the fastest American car made that year, and it has MUCH POWER and has Luxury. It's a great, fun, nice, Buick, car. :3gears: :beer Plus, it is sentelmental, been i the family since '77.
Just Plain Cool..:bglasses: Nothing like cruisin with all 4 windows down(top too for you`vert guys)!!! BB power underhood and a 4-speed are a great bonus!!!! Later,Tony
first car i bought myself. fell in love with the cars when i was 16 and hot rod magazine did a story on the gsx. 1st time i'd ever seen the car. had never even heard of them before. when i saw the title of the article i thought they had screwed up writing gnx. boy was i surprised when i opened it up and saw a picture of a saturn yellow and black gsx. hooked ever since. i also like the confused look on peoples faces when they ask "is that a buick?"
I'd have to say because it's different.I bought my first GS when i was 15 sight unsean. That was 25 years ago and i've been hooked on the GS's ever since. I just wish they were a little less expensive to build.
My reason was not in poll either......Because of my father! He always bought GS's when I was a kid ,growing up in Detroit! I remember him telling me on my Uncles porch one day........."I'm buying the fastest car you can get right now" He and i went to Tamaroff Buick and traded my moms VW beetle in on a Bamboo creme 70' GS stage 1 car. It was on their showroom floor, I was so excited .......till i saw the color! As a 7 year old that was not the most appealing color! uzzled:
i have always been into all kinds of cars. import, 4x4, classic, etc. the first time i saw my buick it was in my late grandfathers barn sitting under a heavy canvas tarp. i pulled it up and slipped behind the drivers seat. i was probably 16. all i could say was "cooooool!" as i looked all around in the insides. the next time i went back to visit the cover was off..and i popped the hood. you can imagine my excitement with i saw the "445 wildcat" emblem! since then every time we came to see my grandparents, i made a visit at least twice out to "the buick". my younger brother (idiot anyhow) always told me i was dumb for liking the car...and couldent understand my facination. well about a year ago i asked my grandpa about it...as to what he was going to do with the car (he was getting in pretty bad shape). he told me that he would never do anything with it, and it would probably go with the estate. not wanting to lose such a gem i asked him for a price to which he replied " a dollar will do fine". so from that day on i began to learn everything i could about the car..and visited it alot more frequently. my brother...again...thought i had lost my mind. over the span of about a year we rebuilt the carb and did other needed maintainance to get the car in running condition. in january we signed the papers to the car and got the title transferred..i almost lost it to my step-grandmother who was going to just sell it on ebay for more money (as if she needed more). luckily we got everything done just in the nick of time. in march we trailered the car home..it was a great feeling. pulling it along people were stopping and staring as we pulled the giant boat of a car along the roadways...although the best was yet to come in may when i entered my first car show. driving the car was such a rush, and i was getting looks at every corner. i hit it off with the rest of the old car guys who were surprised to find a young buck (21) in an old buick. i even got quite a few props from the mopar guys. but i like my electra because its something not every young guy is into..and plus..you dont see alot of the old luxury cars in shows and in good condition. everyone has an old muscle car with a big engine for racing, but not everyone pulles up with a 20' luxury liner. its not everyones forte, but its nice to be different. it was nice for so many old timers to come up and tell me about their dad having one of those "old buicks" and how they never see any more of them, esp not in the good condition that mine is in.
I didn't vote in the poll because I don't own a classic Buick car. I was first exposed to Buick motors because they were offered in Jeeps. My first V-8 swap in a Jeep was a 340 Buick, which took all the off road abuse I could dish out, and at what I consider a bargain at $165.00. My search for more power made me realize there really was no aftermarket support for the 340, but there seemed t be a local vendor (TA Performance) who could help me out with plenty of goodies for a 455. (Big Blocks are COOL!) My first Big Block off road machine was born. It was a mild build, because at the time, that's what I could afford. It still whipped the pants off all the Chebby 350 boys though. :Brow: The sickness continues. I could afford more so I spent more. While it's still a mild build when you compare it to the full race Big Block Buicks, I've had no problems smokin' my buddies who chose the 350 Chevy as their platform. Not many people build a vehicle like mine in my sport without going to Chevy for power, which makes mine kinda unique. I'm different. That's cool.
why a buick I had early exposure to buicks, my friend had a 71 gs clone with a 455, shortly after graduation I had a 84 grand national. I had dreams of building it into a 10 second car, but a budget that wouldn't allow it. I bought an 87 engine and trans with all the wiring etc., but instead of bolting it in and driving it, i decided to rebuild it with the best of everything, and bought a roll bar and other parts like a nos set up i wasn't ready for. needless to say i ended up with a lot of parts i ended up selling on ebay. i loved my car but cancer got hold of it and it cost more to fix than it was worth. It was worth more in parts than whole, so i parted it out. it had t-tops and the posts rusted out. from there i got a hearse it was a cadillac, i had a 85 then an 84, then i bought my girlfriend a buick hearse actualy its a first call car. its used to pick up bodies only. its a lesabre wagon with landau bars and a black top. then my rear end in my 84 cadillac went and as much as i loved the car it cost more to fix than it was worth to me. i sold it for what i paid for it two years ago. its a nice car and it was rare two, it had a pull out table and no divider. it was getting some rust, needed a rear end, a winshield, the a/c and heater was broke and a few small problems. my dream car was a 59 cadillac 3 way landau hearse but they cost 40-80,000 mint and are extreamly hard to find. my second was an early 60's buick hearse which is probably even rarer. there are not many left out there. i loved the fact it was a buick as well as its style. it is smaller so i don't need a million horse power to make it fast. it dont have a divider, a nailhead is a very buildable engine, it has heavy duty axle and breaks. its a very solid car too. it was love at first sight. ever since i seen a picture in a book it was my dream car, in fact now i like it even more than the 59 cadillac. i have no idea what this car is worth in mint condition, but i plan to keep it until it takes me to my grave. i'm going to get back in the buick club again soon, i missed it for many years. i'm so happy i found this jewel, it will be a long time until i see another one for sale in restorable shape.
