I'm about to go through this same swap... Kind of... Swapping out the old 2bbl intake/carb and going with a 4 bbl intake with a holley 650 DP...Poston 114 cam, and their Hi-Rev Lifters.. About how long you think your car was out of commission? Mine is my daily driver, too. As of now I dont have another vehicle. So when I do the swap I will be Pit n' Pat'n wherever I go. I would like to do all of it in one weekend... Hopefully? Glad your making progress though. Oh and the Paint thing, I think it would be worth it too, I'm going to sandblast my intake when I get it and paint it Yellow to match the outside and interior. and cleanup anything else thats possible.
Apparently this part got skipped over. Im 18 and have one car. Im a senior in highschool. Prom is coming up. I need my car back. Ill be lucky if it starts on saturday. Valve covers will get painted after i get it running. The main thing that needs to get cleaned is the block. My car was out about a month. But between work and school and being a beginner, it took longer. But i think it can be done as long as you are focused and know what you are doing. I also ran into roadbumps along that way that i didnt expect. Cason (71skylark3504v) gets his swaps done in a weekend. Check my full swap thread for details. It shows i actually started March 4th. http://v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=160648&page=3
Don't worry you can get it back running again. You've completed the timing consuming parts. My cam swaps have taken 3-4 days. Working average 8- 10 hours a day.:beers2:
Yea, I've read all that. I'll hopefully get it done in the weekends to come, going to ask off of work and go to my granpa's shop who has restored plenty of cars and has many many many years of experience building and tuning engines so that should help. me, him and my bro, working a full day each day should get it knocked out... if everything goes as planned.
NOT to knock your skills or hex you, but if you can-line up a back-up car-ESPECIALLY if your takin your cutie to the prom. The LAST thing you want is to blow a rad. hose or a water pump gasket and ruin your evening- trust me- if it does blow up you'll be the biggest skunk on campus. I know you want to drive your baby, but after problem ridden open heart surgery, you walk a few feet a day for the next few days-not enter a tri-athalon. Maybe you were hoping to get lucky in that big, comfortable ( did i mention big ? ) back seat but it wont work if your car is DOA roadside. Can you borrow a nice ride from a buddy or a brother, or better, spend a few bucks of your car budget and have Dad rent something nice ( for Gods sake earn his trust and dont bend it!!) like a Lucerne or ??? Prom is a big night, but its even BIGGER for her-make sure all your ducks are in a row. ( and by the way, if it were one of my girls, i'd stay up oiling artillery all night-Capisch??:eek2: :TU: Have a good time, be safe, and let us all know how it turned out. ( and spiff up the engine/compartment while youre there!) Robert
That's NO way to live. Especially as a Senior in High school. To not take that car would be a mistake in the end. As long as you inspect all those hoses and tighten all the bolts it is VERY unlikely you will have a problem. These are very reliable cars. If you get it running and test it well, that should be good enough to make it through prom. I drove my car back to college a few hours after a cam swap last Sunday. That was a 60 mile drive, and yes I was a little nervous, but it performed flawlessly. :beers2:
I drove my car to 2 proms in one weekend, but dealing with girls and their parents is a real PITA, and really ruins it. I know, I know if I was father I would be the same way as every dad. I'm not a bad guy, I guess it's just part of being young.
Ah yes, to be young again....I remember taking my buick to many home comings and proms. went to 8 between 4 schools different girl each time and had 6 comment how luxurious and big the buick back seat was!!
So i thought about it and decided to paint some stuff first. I went to Advance and got some thinner and paints. Im wire brushing the block when my dad comes out and asks what im doing. I tell him. He told me that i need to focus on getting it running because my parts are taking up my mom's space in the garage an dim racking up miles on the suburban. So enough with that Yesterday i put the intake, carb, and fuel pump on. New valley pan. New fuel pump gasket, new 4bbl hard fuel line, and new rubber fuel line. Check it!
