Will 74-up "Muscle Cars" with carbs ever be allowed?

    Hi,
I have been following the Pure Stock and Factory Stock drags since the original ones at Stanton in the late-80's. But what I am wondering if the "later model" cars will ever be allowed? I am talking like a 74-85ish Z-28's, Trans-Ams, 442's, Monte Carlo SS and of course the 83-85 Mustang 5.0's. The rules would require no changing, as only the models that only came with carbs would be allowed. These cars came with 4-barrels, dual-exhaust, and were made for performance at the time.
I know everybody is going to say, that is all you see at the drags week in and week out. BUT, when is the last time you seen one these that were in stock condition at the track that has not been hacked up. It has been years since I have seen a Mustang at the track with the orignal Holley 4180 on it, either it has been converted to EFI or has a Victor JR on it with N2O plate on it. I am sure with all the "stock" legal blueprinting and car building there are some models here that would make a strong showing. Just keep the rule book the same; stock size radials, dual-exhaust 2.5" max dia (but the 74+ cars would require a cats), stock pulleys, correct manifolding and such. The only thing is that the 85 Mustangs came with "tube type" headers and roller cams.....
If this ever does happen I have my ride picked out, a 85 Mustang LX Coupe with no options :Brow: I sure hope it does happen, as were else can you find nice examples as these type of car getting used for anything other than shows or hacked up for a bracket car. Thanks for time, and let me know what you think.

I'm not a drag racer, but that seems logical to me.

    Sounds like F.A.S.T. racing.

Thanks for the interest. If I can get enough people together we will get this thing rolling. Does anybody know of a good "F-Body" or GM boards were I can get other groups interested? Thanks

    Mike,

I've always wished the same -- that the Pure Stock events allowed later "muscle" cars. I'd love to match up my bone-stock '85 442 against your '85 Mustang. I can't speak for the Fords, but the mid-80s "muscle" GM G-bodies (442, Monte SS, GN) were more than just a decal package. Not up to the performance standards of the 60s and early 70s Detroit iron, of course, but an enthusiast's car just the same. Could make for some interesting match-ups.

There's no need to change the venue of the current Pure Stocks. Start another one for the other cars. Why not one for ricers, too? 4 x 4's, stake trucks? plow trucks? Garden tractors? rototillers? leaf blowers? belt sanders, snowblowers? :Brow:

OOps, wait a minute, you can see all that at Milan Dragway as it is. Sorry...... :error:

I can understand why some would not want to change anything, as I would like nothing more than to have a 60's Muscle Car. But would really hurt anything if say a few of these post-74 cars showed up and made a few runs between rounds (after paying the track fee and passing tech of course) to see how much interest there would be before making a whole new race? I am just coming up with a few thoughts here, as nobody else seems to enjoy the time and skill it takes to run a "pure stock" car on stock tires

Seems like there wouldn't be much of a competition with a GN in the mix . . .

Well the GN is not a issue, because the rules state "V8, 4-Barrel Carb, and dual exhaust". Even though the GN's are great cars, if you let them run then you get the EFI 5.0 Mustangs and it turns into a regular night at most drag strips.

Perhaps it's just a techicality, but P/S is open to include 1974 cars.

If you're talking PURE STOCK then a stock GN would do no better than mid pack. Of course it would be pretty hard to tech a late model vehicle. :Brow:

This would leave out the GN anyway.

Mid pack? I owned a stock GN that ran in the elevens at 116 mph. I don't think anything in the PSMCDR rules would slow it beyond the twelves (other than that pesky bit about the carburator).

    t-type

i had a stock 87 t-type for awhile it was a low 14 sec car maybe high 13s nothing more, with some tweaking it might go 1/2 sec quicker.i would'nt mind seeing some newer carburated cars running [75-79] Zs or TAs it would give the stude's someone else to run.

I like the idea. I'd love to see some "Bandit" Trans Am's out there fending off the Mustangs and T-topped 442's.

I'm sure it would take plenty of publicising and organizing to get it off the ground. It would also take plenty of time and patience to build it up.

Mike you're right, most of these cars have been hacked up into "bracket" cars. It would be great to see some pristine stock examples again. I was just getting my license when they were new.

    I say: "Do it!" :beer

Sounds like we have some interest. I am going to start visiting some of the other boards and get some interest going. I know it is short notice, but what I would like to do, is get a few cars gathered up and come out to Martin on June 17 and run the Friday night program if a few of you guys are going to stick around for that.
The car I will bring is a 83 Mustang GT that is 100% stock, but the smog equipment has been removed. Other than that it still has the factory plug wires and mufflers on it. Thanks again everybody for your interest. Mike

    Sounds kinda neat

I know some are rolling thier eye's saying NO-WAY, but if you really stop to
think about it for a second, I wonder how many decent un-butchered 83-88
Monte SS cars are left? Early 80's-87 Hurst Olds/442's?? Pontiac 2+2's?
Stock carburated mid 80's Mustangs? I don't think there are as many nice
ones left as a person would think.
It wouldn't bother me to see some :TU:

I think Friday night racing at Martin is going to be Diesel Truck shoot-out.FYI

    PeeeeeeeeYewwwwwwwwwwwwwww

I for one, am not interested in driving, watching, or even hearing about an 80-87 (or for that matter, 73-87) Cutlass, 442, Hurst, or Calais run 17.0's, no matter how nice or unbutchered it is. The 307 didn't get it at all, and the earlier ones were tanks. How about a 260 that could run a 21.0? Wow. What's next? Unmolested Quad 4's? Achievas? Aleros?

(Noticed I only badmouthed my own favorite brand.....well up until 11987, that is). :( :(

Now if you want to talk 350 (or 403) transplants into these cars to otherwise Pure Stock rules (manifolds, tires), I, too could be very interested in that. In fact my brother Rick has one of them just begging for one of my 350's. :Brow: :Brow: :Brow:

350 crate motors in Montes, 351's in Fox Mustangs, now this could be cool. :TU: Not sure what small block Pontiac engines would apply to the Grand Prix..?? Is there a small block Pontiac engine, or are they all small blocks, just soime have large pistons in them?   OK with me to put 350 Buicks in the Regals.
