Will advance springs other than MSD work?

Will any other brand of advance springs work in an MSD ready to run distributor? I am trying to fine tune when my timing comes in, just want to know if brands like Accel, Mr. Gasket, etc. will work, and if one brand is more accurate, or allows more precise tuning. Thanks.

I used Mr. Gasket springs in my ready to run distributor and never had a problem with them. If I had to bet it would be that there all made by the same people and packaged different for each seller.

Thank you monkey337. If I may ask, when do you have your timing "all in" by, 1,300 to 1,800? What springs did you use, to accomplish where you are at? Thanks for any further help.

I did a little checking for my Mallory Unilite mechanical advance springs.

A friend sent me the wire diameter size on the Mallory 'red' spring - .028.

Looks like a .028 Mr. Gasket spring will work.

GM stock distributor springs are about the right size.

I was able to find some small double ended springs with various wire diameters at True Value Hardware that should work ok.

Look in True Value's small spring drawers and you should find a fairly good assortment.

You can also wind your own on a lathe and with a little imagination, a drill press.

Sorry but I don't remember what springs I used or what RPM the timing was all in. I did use the large "black" advance bushing to get more initial timing though. The car ran 10.70's and I only bracket raced it so I didn't do any additional testing with different springs or care if it ran faster.

Thanks Ken, I was able to find it and print it off of their website.

Thanks C9, I will look at both options. Just going to have to play with it, till I get what I want.

I have the blue one in there now, gives me 20* of mechanical advance. I may try the black one as well, and bump up my initial, to compensate. That and the springs might bring things in sooner.

One more question, what initial and total do you run? I run 17* initial, 37* total, with that blue bushing installed.

At 10.70's, I completely understand why you did not fix what was not broken. Thanks.
