Has anyone with a performance 455 tried Wilson' billet supersucker (cloverleaf) carb spacers? If so whats your experience.I am already going to need a hood scoop.Interestingly engine masters did a show on air filter types and salad bowl, velocity stacks gained hp over no filter while factory (like on 455s) lost about 150hp on a 700hp big block chevy!
A tapered spacer is usually a sure thing in terms of hp/TQ improvement.,..now about this velocity stack,..
added 25HP/Tq on the dyno when added to my 525HP build. There are knock off brands that are half the price as Wilson...do the same thing.
I noticed 0 difference on my last combo ( 464, iron heads,308s ran 10.90s) between the the tapered spacer we ran and my 2 in plastic open hole spacer. Notice no difference with k&n flow control air cleaner or not, with open element top or not, or with a pan the enclose around my cowl hood or not.........all ran same ets, same egts. I liked the plastic spacer better, carb stayed cooler......my tapered spacer was made from aluminum
Some claim a "Shear Plate" nets more HP than the HVH set-up. I haven't tested it out myself though. This Schmidt Motor Works "Flow Plate is an interesting piece also, ... though I believe it's for 4500 (Dominator) Carbs. $29.00 Shipping $7.00 in the USA (UPS Ground) The SMW 4500 Flow Plate is a blended carburetor spacer that fits 4500 flange open plenum manifolds, open spacers or tunnel ram top plates. The fairing style design improves flow from the carburetor exit into the manifold by providing a gradual blended transition from the 4 holes in the carburetor base to the square opening in the manifold. Bore size is for 2.0 throttles Flange thickness is 3/8 Larry
Heck I was busy one test and tune night trying all the different combos, I even ran my hvh upside down..........still no difference on my motor. As with any like this I fell it will be more combo dependent. If your combo has a weekness or hole then a spacer might improve airflow, or plenum volume, carb signal whatever. But as far as I can say on mine last combo.......no difference between any combo of no spacer to hvh, to 2 inch plastic, to with or with regular air filter, k&n flow control both with or without breather top, with or without air scoop pan. Course I could say the same thing with my cams too......my pistons gs110, custom comp cam grind, and my ta308s all ran within just a few hundreths. Same with an biggs 850 cfm and a prosystems 950 cfm. Though my prosystems carb idled far better and was more consistant. I think my iron heads are just maxed out and nothing external I can do can fit more air through them the way they are?? Point is just cause someone pick up hp with one of these, or a salad bowl as air cleaner doesn't mean it will on all.
I run a Wilson tapered 4-hole 4150. I have another one on my new engine that was pinned and blended into the throat of the intake.
On Visner's (V.E.D.) Dyno, I was running an open 2" spacer. Dave told us to try the 'dyno room' 4 hole spacer of his design. It did not add HP or much torque. What it did was bring the torque in sooner with a much flatter curve. Dave told me to keep it. Still on my engine and its engraved, "dyno room only" on the side.
I had the HVH Supersucker on my Dominator setup and tried the Wilson....ran the same.. .08 gain in quarter kept the Wilson since it had my name on it..... They both increased EGT so they must work....
Check out pages 96-99 in the Aug Hot Rod Magazine...just got mine today...they are discussing the benefits of using the different type of carb spacer,,,including Wilson.
