Im going to buy a winch for my car trailer and just want some advice on what i should buy. I MAY PULL A JUNK CAR UP THE TRAILER WHAT DO I NEED.
I just put an old Ramsey winch that I had in our trailer. It was a small winch, series 2500 I think. I had it for years and had never installed it in anything. I bought it for the front of a Jeep, but thought it was too small. Anyway, I have used it the past few weeks to winch non running cars in to our trailer and it has done a great job and hardly struggles at all to pull them in. Now I need to put a battery in the trailer and wire it to stay charged for the winch and lights.
I use a 3000lb winch with a 50' cable and I hook a snatch block on the car then loop the cable through and back to the front of trailer to double the pulling power. I only paid $100 for the winch new and it has worked great. If I was using it all the time I'd have paid triple and bought a Warn or big name brand but its not necessary for limited use. Now I see they have inexpensive winches that have a remote wireless control which is even nicer especially if you are by yourself. A car may weigh 4000lb but it doesn't take anywhere near that amount of force to roll it up a trailer even with flat tires.
I have hade this AP 3500 15 years. You can pull a car trough the woods, on the side. From start i have to change kables from winch to batery to bigger area. And i have to watch up with the wire going in to the drum so i dont have to much wire on one side, and enter wrong side of the wheel. One hour to get it right again. The other winch i have is reserv, not good. to much nois I have don some brakets so i can pull cars to the garage alone. Goran
