Windshield washer pump mystery...

Okay, windshield washer pump wasn't working on my '69 GS 400, so I picked up a new one. Pulled the old one, seems simple enough, there's the windshield wiper motor with a metal prong that catches on the wiper pump mechanism, plus a solenoid on the pump itself so that the wipers can work without the washer fluid going all the time. Fair enough.

I replace the pump. No fluid. I check the lines for plugs. No fluid. I run a multimeter to the two contacts from the harness that go to the pump, presumably to activate the solenoid that opens the fluid flow. With the washer switch off, there's no current. With the washer switch on, there's ~11V, which I figure is not abnormal since the car's not on.

Okay, the switch is switching. The fluid can go through. The pump is being turned by the windshield wiper motor. Yet, dry windshield (this reminds me of a Chris Rock bit that's a bit too R-rated to put in here).

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

    John

Can you hear a sound coming from the pump? If you can it should work. Maybe the metal nozzles are clogged. Take the hoses off them and then try pump. Does it work now? If it does stcik some pins in the nozzles asa they are clogged or corroded inside.

I had my fun with the 69 wildcat washers i have. on one car i got lucky and changed the discharge kit and got washers working, on the other car i did the same and still had no fluid. Turns out the plunger seals where hard and it wouldn't suck or pump as it was stroking (which sucked).
With the outlet portion of your pump removed get someone to push the wash button and see if the plunger is going in eand out, like Dave says you should hear this but seeing is believeing. If the plunger is going in and out and its a new assembly it should pump, if not something on the plunger is screwed up or the discharge portion with check valve may be assembled wrong? I suppose you did the easy stuff like see if the suction line or pickup in the tank was plugged? Alot of those little round gaskets from under the caps that come on the jugs of washer fluid end up in the tank and on the suction pickup. You could try priming the pump by holding the tank above the pump and with the discharge lines unhooked see if you get any spray. you shouldn't have to prime the pump but it wouldn't hurt i guess. If the electrical activation is ok, its simple mechanics which sometimes isn't simple......good luck,Gord
