I have a 1971 GS455 Convertible and have had to replace the wiper motor recently. Question is what is the right color for the motor? Should it be black or should it be silver? Does anyone out there no what is correct? Thanks, John

They should be some type of silver plating for the hidden wiper type. Was probably silver cad plating. Eastwood Detail Gray is a pretty good match. Black is incorrect and are usually rebuilt units. Originals have date code and part # stickers on them as well. Try not to paint that.

The bottom of the motor in the bottom pic is painted black, but should be silver. I think they were bare steel and bare alunimum, but may have been some silver plating, like Dave said. Either way, no black paint.

The cylindrical part of the motor in the picture looks silver to me. I have never seen black on an original car. Jsut the washer part is black plastic

Well know that I look at it again your right cylinder is half black and half silver. Not correct.

Bottom steel part is cad or clear zinc (silver). Upper aluminum part is bare aluminum. The pump assembly steel housing (the upper shaped steel part that is held on with 3 small hex bolt/screws and contains the white plastic pump) is clear zinc (you get this metal part when you order a new "pump" from The Parts Place, etc).

You can play around with various spray can paints and recreate a reasonable facsimile of the cad/clear zinc on the lower steel housing. The upper pump asseblies are cheap enough so buying a new one is the way to go on that.

On the aluminum housing a good LIGHT rubbing with some 0000 steel wool works pretty well.

.....or you can send it off and spend a lot of money having it all redone.
