Wiring for gauge from 1980 Skylark

Discussion in 'The "X" bodies' started by theholycow, Oct 18, 2013.

  1. I acquired this gauge, NOS originally meant for a Skylark. I do not have the pinout for it. I can probably guess for the fuel gauge based on my existing fuel gauge (hopefully same pattern just smaller) and volt meter should be easy enough, but I can't guess about the temp gauge unless I try to extrapolate from a hopefully successful guess on the fuel gauge...

Anyone know how to wire it or have a 1980 Skylark gauge cluster wiring diagram?

Not much there is there. The first order of business is to find out what voltages the fuel gauge and temp gauge run at. Is it 12v or is it resistored down to some lower value like 5v or 8v? If it's 12v it's cake. Hook each one up individually and if the gauge goes the wrong way switch the wires.

  3. I appreciate the thoughts but none of that is news to me. I was looking for more specific information.

I found some. It's not perfect but it's a way to start guessing at least. It's from the OEM service manual. I had it buried in a collection of unrelated stuff, which is why I couldn't find it before and posted this thread. In my experience the wiring diagrams in the OEM service manual often resemble the physical layout for stuff like this, so it may work as pictured.

Edit: Though, later in the manual it mentioned a printed circuit board for those gauges...that's discouraging. I might end up having to just use the face and get aftermarket gauges to hack together with it to achieve the desired result. Or maybe I could find the circuit board in a junkyard and hack that...unlikely...

Edit 2: Found an eBay listing for the PCB for a 1980 Skylark without these particular gauges and the photo showed a plain printed circuit with no components, just traces that go from the plug to the gauge that it does have. If the one for this cluster is similar then that means I can just directly hook these up.

I have the '80 buick manual on CD, complete with wiring diagrams, their clarity is not the best, but I could print/scan the skylark diagrams and email to you. I am at work but can check later. The cd has B bodies too, so I could send both to you. Tried to cut and paste to make copies once, doesn't work, but you can print what's visible on the screen. Colors and wiring designation are not the best, but maybe better than nothing. On the 80 Regal for temperature, just used the Dk Grn and the Ground @/12V and worked fine on AutoMeter stuff
