Argh. TH350, won't shift at wot, gets to where it would shift and then goes "RRRrrrrRRRRrrrr" and the engine rpm's drop. Hoping it's just a vacuum problem as usual as the tranny has less than 500 miles on it.

sounds like an engine fuel or ignition problem to me. The RPM's shouldn't drop. You don't have a rev limiter do you? If it just wouldn't shift, I'd think governor, or modulator. Is the detent cable operating and not stuck open?

    Nope, just the stock HEI.

How can I check for that?

Cody......when my fuel pump went, mine did the same thing. Funny thing was the pressure was OK and with the fuel hose disconnected, it pumped well over a pint in 30 seconds (considered good for a stock engine). When I just went ahead and replaced it, the problem went away and has been gone ever since. Just replace it and see what happens, I'll bet that's your problem. :bglasses:

I agree, sounds like fuel. Fuel pumps are cheap and easy to replace. If yours is old, replace it.

I've been living with this problem until the other day when a lightbulb lit up and I thought about the gas cap. I had put a locking gas cap on it (to deal with potential idiots who might like to steal $2.55 a gallon gas) and thrown the original one in the trunk. So I went and did a WOT run with the (locking) gas cap loosened to the point where it was almost falling out and it shifted right into 2nd ( :eek2: ) without the problem! I did 3 wot runs and it shifted fine each time and then I tightened it back up, the problem came back and just to make sure, I loosened it again and the problem came back for 1 of the 2 runs but I don't think I loosened it all the way. What's with this, am I getting a vacuum in the tank or is a vent plugged or something?

Sounds like your tank is vented through the cap. Did you buy the right locking cap?? Are you sure??

Right locking cap??? There was only one available when I bought it???

Question marks for emphasis

Sometimes there may be 2 caps for the same model car, but different years. Sounds like your tank isn't being vented, and the cap seems to be the problem. Either it's defective, or the wrong application. Can't think of any other explanation if the symptoms go away when you loosen or remove the cap.

I tossed on the old one and the problem is gone. Now I'll be able to hit the track without worrying about it as this was the only thing preventing me from getting some numbers.
