In case anyone else is having the same problem: I got tired of trying to find a woodgrain shifter handle for my '70 GS so I decided to make one out of real wood. I used two pieces of oak and using my black handle as a template I cut them out with a jigsaw. Then I routered out the channels and glued the two halves together in a similar fashion to the way the stock handle is joined together. I then used a belt sander and a lot of hand sanding to properly round off all the edges. It turned out pretty nice except that it's a little thicker than the stock piece do to the fact that if I made it any thinner it would probably crack. Now if only I can find the correct color stain! o No:
