Ya, with the last couple generations, staring at you phone is the national pastime.. Watching baseball requires patience, and the instant gratification that so many seek these days is hard to come by. Not so sure I would put a fork in it yet, while the peak attendance was 2007, it had been pretty steady in numbers until the pandemic. I see it coming back to pre-pandemic levels in the next few years, if we can get some control on inflation here. Gas/food prices are killing the "fun money" for families, and things like baseball games are the first thing that gets dropped when money becomes tight. Baseball is a truly American experience, and I for one certainly hope to catch a couple games in person next year. I had gone to games every year up until the pandemic, have not been to one for three years now. It's a great way to spend a summer evening. JW
I'm spoiled rotten when it comes to Baseball. Although the Sox were the doormat of the American League for many years, it doesn't get any better then the Sox vs the Yankees at Fenway Park on a warm summer night. And I got to watch the splendid splinter in person.
The ONLY baseball game I ever went to was the Brooklyn Dodgers way back when. Never been to another. Tom T.
Now that's funny right there... Thanks for posting that Mike, I am just about to trudge thru the snow out to the shop for another day, and needed the laugh.. JW
Well, "we" will meet, apparently. Congrats with the win. Not really impressed with the way USA plays, but Holland isn't entertaining either. Could go either way. But I don't care much any way. I'm a club supporter. The atmosphere in my stadium is way different than the atmosphere in nation matches. I'd rather have Bijlow win the League with Feyenoord than him winning the world cup. About the games, I don't understand baseball and don't understand people like it. I don't understand American football, but I can see why people like it and I understand basketball and why people like it, but it's not really my cup of tea. If I understand correctly "soccer" as you call it is more regarded as a womens sport in the US, but in the rest of the world, it is huge.
I honestly don't think that at all -- it is just that the men's team has sucked, possibly because the best athletes here are split with other sports that pay way, way, way more. Elsewhere soccer pays the most and gets the top athletes. The mainstream professional sports where women can make decent money in the US are: -- tennis. -- basketball. -- soccer. -- golf. Even then the US basketball and soccer women play overseas in the offseason where they can actually make way more money. (golfers too to an extent) (Note: not counting skiing or surfing or olympics or x-games stuff,) The US women's team has just always been good, but the rest of the world is catching up, much like men's soccer is making strides slowly but surely. But the US is advancing by scoring 2 goals in three games? Good for the US, but yeesh, what a snooze.
Interesting. Apparently I understood incorrectly, but that is definitely what people here think what it is. US women's team was always good. The Dutch ladies are catching up last years, winning the European Cup and second on the World Cup after the US ladies. Rightly so, I remember it as a correct win. I feel Holland is regarded as one of the favorites for the end win, but that's incorrect in my view. I think we're slightly favorite against the US, but there definitely are chances for the US. 60/40. Berhalter will know all about us. He actually played here with Cambuur Leeuwarden, in a town I used to live in.
Wow, that got twisted real quick. I respect all sports fans' choices. And I can take a joke - that meme CCM posted was DAMN funny!! To each their own. But Jim, here's a thing: try to catch some Aussie rules football on some cable channel. Imagine NFL. On a much bigger field. With zero padding and no helmets. Now THAT'S a man's game. And I don't even follow it. It makes rugby (I'm from NZ, can you say ''All Blacks''?) look like ''soccer''. And frankly, Aussie rules reduces NFL/gridiron to a well-padded joke. I can only laugh at the American code, but I accept it is a deep passion for many. Went to the baseball in Oakland with my kids a few years ago, had a great time! Damn good tradition. Great sport. Now back to my World Cup ''soccer''......every match live on my TV and loving it. Just seen England cane Wales. Go Aussies! And good luck to USA...
Not any more, Stefan. Major League Soccer is officially booming, big crowds at all games, new franchises every year. It's a big reason why the USA is now so competitive in the World Cup now.
I think I would say 75-25 or 80-20. I haven't watched Netherlands this WC, but I just think of them as a level above the US.
I used to think Rugby was the toughest sport; then I saw Aussie Rules Football. That sport is no joke! Australians are as crazy as they are awesome
Pretty funny reading all the small minded people that don’t understand the tactics of the worlds game .
