from Germany Hi there, i am doing an engine overhaul of a 1970 350 bucik engine out of my skylark. after removing the oil pan i wanted to remove the nuts of the piston rods. i don't know what kind oft nuts i need to remove these nuts. may be anybody here can give me a hint. It's no torx and i tried also "vielzahn" (see the picture, i don't know how it's called in english) but nothing seems to be the right one. may be you can tell me if the heads used in the years 1968-1971 have no valve guides? thnx for your help, great community here! Oliver
Geewiz, its been awhile, but I do know you need a 12 point STANDARD/SAE socket, I THINK its a 9/16 12 point, I might be wrong on the size, its been years Buicks USE valve guides on both intake and exhaust valves, BUT, they DO NOT use exhaust guide valve seals. Buicks theory was theres no vacuum on the exhaust valve, therefore no vacuum to draw oil down the guides and into the combustion chamber. But the oil can still weep past the guide and valve stem and into the exhaust stream. Most of us have the guides machined for seals on the exhaust also.
"Vielzahn" is 'many teeth' direct translation to Englisch, though the term isn't used as such in our language. It's a 12 point standard sized socket you're needing. Metric is probably most prevalent in Deutschland, I'd imagine. Willkommen Sie zum 'v8Buick forums'! Ich hoffe dir geht es gut. Haben Sie mehr fragen, bitte du gefragt. :TU: Gary
