Year One sail panel material bubbling

A couple weeks ago I bought a headliner for my sons 72 skylark from Year One. It is a non-perf and came with pre-glued sail panels. I installed last week and they looked fine. I went to do some more interior work this evening, and the sail panel material is bubbled up really bad on both sail panels. Have any of you had this happen? I'm a little pissed and of course Year One is closed.

I bought a set of YO door panels, sail panels and headliner a few years back and has the same problem. I didn't notice until they were going in, which was a time later than when purchased. I ultimately used my original ones, having my body guys re-dye them.

That's weird I bought mine from OPGI as well but they were not pre-covered, just the boards. The headliner kit came with extra material to cover them.

I bought mine from Y.O. years ago. They were made by Legendary. The sail panels were all bubbled and Y.O. refused to help me, but, Legendary sent me new ones and I was "the only person who ever had this complaint". The new ones bubbled, too. I too used the originals and recovered them myself - they still looks fine.

Whatever supplier is making headliners for Y.O. must still be using the same poor quality glue. I would assume that their glue combined with closed up interior heat creates a reaction which swells the material and separates the material from the panel. I can't believe that there has not been a massive number of complaints on this issue.

I called Year One this morning and emailed pictures to them. I made a demand that they replace the sail panels, and I also demanded that they send the panels and material bare. I told them that their glue is obviously junk and will happen again if they send them assembled. I was told that the manufacturer would not do that, to which my response was, "If they refuse to let me glue it myself, we will have a problem". I also told them that they need to get replacements to me asap, as I need to have this car done for my sons birthday on Labor Day. The Y.O. rep agreed to forward my demands, and forwarded the pics on to the supplier. I received an email this afternoon that the supplier (Acme, which I assume is Acme Auto Headlining Co.) has sent new bare panels and the material so I can glue them myself. They said I should have them by the end of the week as well. I will update this thread when new parts arrive. BTW, from what I have seen, parts from OPGI seem to be much better quality than those from Year One.

NOTE: I have noticed that the headliner material seems to be a vinyl type product versus the OEM cloth fabric. ThT may be where the problem lies. I'm not sure.
    Thanks for the responses.

I have always had great results with OPGI parts. I should have ordered them there instead of saving $20 at Year One. Lesson learned. :Dou:

My kit was the same way in which I had to glue the sail panels myself.
I did this years ago and had the same experience. The bubbling, etc.

My theory is that the headliner material itself does not adhere well using glue.

I did talked to a pro auto upholsterer guy and he said you use good glue (like 3M 90 or equi.) spray both the cardboard backer and the headliner material. Wait for them to tack and then very carefully glue them together. He said the alternative was to sandwich the two together and flip over. Then, glue around the edge of the backside and the edges of the headliner material. Wait for tack then pull hard and tight and and adhere. Basically the underside of the part you see won't have any glue on it.

I haven't tested any of these methods myself and still have my bubbled panels up.

I could also see an alternative is to sandwich an extremely thin material between the cardboard and the headliner material that prevent bubbles from being formed. The bubble essentially being lack of adhere between the two materials.

Good Luck and yes definitely frustrating. Will need lots of testing to make sure your method works.

I removed the first set of Y.O. sail panels and checked them out yesterday. It appears that they use a two sided tape type of material to adhere the fabric to the panel. Poor method in my opinion. I suspect that poor adhesive product is where the issue is. I was told that the new set will be bare so I can select the glue of my choosing. I have had outstanding luck with 3M "77" spray adhesive. That is what I plan to use. I'll spray both the panel and the fabric and apply after allowing them to tack up. Quality glue should fix the problem. I'll post pictures next week when I get the new items.

My PUI sail panels are bubbling. Lost a point.
