This worked for my raised brown letters. This has been talked about many times with lots of good suggestions. Gordon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eM0DpS6gsrg
Funny how he says he doesn’t want to get aggressive but using a drill motor. Taking 220 grit sandpaper in your hand and lightly scuffing each letter for about 5 seconds works perfectly and costs about $1.his method cost $40 for the drill and $8 for the wheel and is 10x more aggressive. To each his own I guess.
Great video, Gordon. I have been resistant to cleaning the blue film off of my new BFG’s, but glad to see a viable solution. Report back in a few months if you don’t mind, would love to hear how this held up over time.
It was hard to see in the video but the letters turned out white. Maybe the new bFG’s don’t turn brown, seem to think someone mentioning a year(s) or so ago there was a bad batch that turned brown?
I think it’s been a problem for a while. Maybe the last 3+ years? Not sure. The old Wesley’s bleach white formula was the absolute best for RWL tires. I haven’t washed my pile since it’s been painted, let alone worry about cleaning the new BFGs lol
Mine were 6 years old and getting browner no matter what I did. Contacted Michelan customer service back in August and they said go to a dealer and file a claim. I did that and they gave me 50% off new set. I was happy with that since my tires were 6 years old (very low miles). These are nice and white, lets see how long that lasts.
I had a set that were brown out of the box. Only thing that would whiten them up was sanding them. Within a week they were poop brown again
BFG fixed the problem. I had a full set replaced in 2020 at no cost by my dealer. The last set I purchased for my T/A last fall, are okay.
These came on my 73, they are date coded 1990, and still white! Back when quality control was a thing.
If you see the brown blooming it is actually the anti-ozone layer in the rubber leaching to the surface. Typically caused by UV exposure.. it’s coming from the inside of the rubber not on the exterior. so you’re never going to permanently remove it . Griots says they tested their new wheel tire & mat cleaner on bf Goodrich extensively and will remove the browning , but will need to be a maintence item . https://www.griotsgarage.com/3-in-1-wheel-tire-mat-cleaner/
My GS lives in the garage mostly and the letters turned brown no matter how many times I tried to clean them. Glad they are gone and hopefully don't have to deal with that anymore.
I sanded mine too. I spent a couple hours with one of those vibrating cutters using the sanding attachment. Got them white, but then turned brown again just sitting in the garage. I'm disgusted with these tires. I'm just going to have the tires flipped with the letters facing in and be done with it.
I flipped mine...not in the advertising business. I run my Hoosiers black....don't need it saying Hoosier twice on each sidewall. Gotta say though Hoosier does do a nice job with the letters compared to most racing tire companies.
The problem is fixed meanwhile and some (including me have been successful in claiming free replacements). What did you do to your Buick today?
It's been over a year since I got them. How optimistic should I be that they will do anything? Replacement is one thing. To me, that;'s an even exchange. But if they gave me a 50% discount on a new pair, I still can't afford to shell out another $500. Why should I have to pay anything? I'll bring the old ones back to the tire place and they can return to the supplier. I don't need two sets of tires.
Mine were almost 6 years old and they gave me 50% off a new set. I was fine with that since they would need to be replaced anyway in a few years. They kept my old set to send back to BFG. Never hurts to ask customer service what they can do for you. Make sure you let them know how many shows you attend and how many comments you get on your brown letter tires brown letters are a poor advertisement.
This guy made a video on how to get them replaced. He says in video date codes affected are 01-14 to 25-20. Mine are 14-19 26-19 14-19 01-19 Thinking of calling.
