Has anyone had any experience with GPS Trackers for anti-theft units. Just curious if they are feasible to make sure your car stays where you park it. Thanks
I hide an Apple Air Tag in both my cars. Most newer cars can be tracked by the manufacturer if need be.
Question, the Apple Air Tags have on distance limits, correct. You only need an Apple cell phone or computer to track your car, correct? I have an Android cell phone and the only GPS trackers cost a Monthly fee to use. Unfortunately I can't find a GPS tracker that does charge a fee. Vet
I was foolish enough to buy a Soundlogic Track & Find device which I intended to install on my enclosed trailer. When I got set to install it, I found that it has a range of about 60 feet. My eyes can do better then that. If anyone has used a tracking device that has a useful range, I would love to hear about it.
I don't believe there are any distance limits on Apple Airtags, although there must be some Apple device nearby in order for them to report. I believe there is an Android app which can track Apple Airtags.
I believe this will work for my intended need. Apple has released an app on the Google Play Store for Android phones called Tracker Detect, which gives Android owners the ability to scan for nearby AirTags and other Find My-compatible devices that may be tracking you without your knowledge. The Tracker Detect app is free to download from the Google Play Store and does not require an Apple ID account to use. It is compatible with Android devices running Android 6.0 or later. Apple released the Tracker Detect app in response to concerns that AirTags could be used to secretly track people as they are small enough to be discretely placed in a bag, coat or vehicle
All these devices that are inexpensive and run off a quarter-sized battery, don't use GPS like you might imagine. Apple air tags work off of Bluetooth so someone with Bluetooth on an iPhone must be within 800ft of the air tag for it to work. It doesn't have satellite, WiFi or mobile network connectivity on its own. If it is dropped in the middle of the Sahara desert with no iPhones or cell towers, it is lost.
There is one issue to be cognizant of with the use of Apple Airtags. Any intelligent thief (many are not) should be aware of the possibility of trackers being present and would likely use a tracker detector to find and remove those tags before they reach their final destination with a stolen vehicle.
Well, that sucks. I have to use something to protect my Buick. I have a concealed engine cutoff switch, but it's not fool proof. I could remove the coil wire and hope the theft didn't bring a spare. Vet

We use a true gps tracker on our dogs when we travel. $10/month. Device costs about $100. Charge lasts for months. They notify us if the charge drops to 10%. From their website: "Fi Series 3 uses three satellite positioning systems: GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo. That's a total of 78 satellites working around the world to locate your dog within a 6 foot radius." VET - the odds are that there will be an iphone/apple device near your GS if it is stolen. No one is going to take your car to the desert. Get the Airtags and relax.
I hear you. It's just that Northern Virginia (to close to DC) has a high auto stolen. The higher rate is stolen wheels, tires, catalytic converters. We just had a neighbor that had his wheels/tires stolen in broad daylight. The first time I parked my Buick GS in front of my townhouse, I got a lot of attention. Had to park it back into my storage unit. I will take your advice and get Airtags and pray my car doesn't get stolen or striped. PS, I had my first muscle car stolen back in 1973. Never recovered. So, you can understand/feel my stress. Vet
I hear you - I had a Harley stolen. That was the end of my 2 wheel adventures! I would recommend a car alarm as well. At least the noise should scare off any thieves!
Android can use the tag called Tile. Apparently, as long as someone near it has their Bluetooth on, it can track the location of it. I don't think it matters if it's an IPhone or an Android, as long as someone's got their Bluetooth on, Tile somehow gets notified that the Tile tag is nearby, and the Tile tag owner is shown where the tag is at.
Nice to know, I'll have to check it out. More options the better. When I was a kid, I rigged a smoke bomb to my mom's car. When she hit the ignition a high pitch sound when off and smoke pored out from the hood. Scared the hell out of her. I paid for that prank, ouch. Vet
No, no distance limit. Any I phone within blue tooth distance will update the location and you can track the tag. If there is no i phone within range, then it will show you the last location, but with all the i phones out there, it's pretty effective.
