Hey, I was wondering what was the original setup of the radio in the Buick GSs from 1970-72.There were AM only, and AM-FM radio, sometime the 8-Trac player, but was there only the front speaker???Was there an option for speakers on the package tray???Or was it standard??Or absolutly no speakers on the package tray????

Pretty sure rear speaker was an option with the am/fm. My 72 has an original radio that has a three prong plug under the tuner knob that slides on/off the shaft as the knob does and must be there for the rear speaker to operate. I believe it's some sort of fade, front to back feature. My car, however, did not come with a rear speaker. I'll look in some of my 72 manuals to be sure. Give me a reminder if I haven't responded by Sunday night. Not sure what you mean by package tray. Clarify for me as I may have a schematic of the 72.

Rear speaker was also an option on the am radio in 1970.

Each was an option. Just having a radio at all was an option. Our GSX just has the 70 AM radio ( U63 option) with the rear speaker (U80 option).

Also you left one out. The 70 rear convertible speaker option (no package tray mind you). We have that rare option on our stage one convert. It also has all of the options including am/fm radio (U69 option), 8 track tape player (U57 option) along with the front and rear speakers (U80 option).

In 72 the A body was added to the stereo radio option list that already existed for a number of years for the bigger high end Buicks like Rivs and Electras.

Typically cars in the late 60 up to the early 70s did not have FM radio. FM was new and we just had heard about it. For those that had AM equipped cars we sometimes added a thin FM tuner unit ( next to our reverb controller) and piggy backed off the audio output amp of the existing AM radio. I know the first car I drove to high school in 66 was factory radio delete.

Most here will not remember it but cars back then could be ordered heater delete. I think one of Buicklawyer's 66 442s is heater delete. I remember going to a junk yard to look for heaters for some of my grandfather's trucks that he ordered new sans heaters.

My son just picked up a stock 1972 century.
It has a am with a 8 track .2 speakers in the front and 2 in the rear.
what I was wandering is should we keep it like that or should we or modify??
Is the car worth more in original condition???

Though I'm 36, I've never actually handled an 8 track tape.....I've only seen vinyl albums, never played one.... For the longest time, I thought that 8 track meant that it only had 8 songs in it.....

You know, my son will never handle a cassette tape, much less an 8 track cassette. By the time he starts listening to his own music (which I'll call crap and noise,) he probably won't be handling CDs either, just MP3/4s. He'll ask what AM/FM means too, as he'll only have XM or Sirrius with video feeds....man I feel old...

The three wire adapter you are referring to is for the front to rear speaker seperation . It is a total seperate piece that slides over the shaft on the tuner side . Can't remember how it hooks up under the dash . It was also a dealer installed option . I installed many .

If that makes you feel old , have you ever seen a 4 track ? How many out there remember them ???? I think I still have one , if I do you can bet its very deep in one of my junk boxes .

I remember going to a resturant and the big deal was this huge reel-to-reel tape player. It WAS funny when the tape ran out and it made a "bap bap bap" sound as it spun freely.

Speaking of this, my granddaughter won't know lead was in gasoline, cars were once big, and gas was cheap..

    8-Tracks were in My 1983

In my 83 Caddy, I had what I believe to be GM's last 8-track player.

Does anyone have a picture of rear speakers on a 72 skylark convertible?
I have a 72 I just bought with rear speakers but i thought they were after-market?
Does anyone have a factory radio for sale?

Not true. You could only get one front and one rear speaker from the factory on 72 A cars regardless of AM, FM, AM/FM stereo or 8 track options.

in 72, i thought, that if u ordered am/fm stereo, there were corner speakers in the dash & dual rears. right or wrong?
with am/fm, am could u not also order a 2nd rear speaker? the radios had a fader ring on the tuner shaft.
i know for a fact in the chevelles, 1970 & up that u could have 2 rear speakers and one front speaker for am/fm mono.
