No. Only one front and one rear regardless of radio option.

Does your 72 skylark convertible have a 6x9" speaker on each side of the top pump in the well? Mine has 2 in the rear and I thought it was aftermarket until I looked at the metal and it appears to be factory. Of course they were replaced with newer speakers and cut through the top well liner and had grills on them. Is this how yours is??

My 70 convertible only has one rear one. I guess there is an outside possibility that a CONVERTIBLE in 72 could have come with 2 speakers. Never heard of this but anything is possible. I have never heard of a hardtop from 70-72 coming with dual rears but it seems a slight possibility that a 71 or 72 conv. could have, only because they are impossible to hear with the top down! Duane would be a good one to ask this to!

I have a 1970 Skylark Vert. Where was the rear speaker located? I would love to add one. Pictures anyone?

Pretty sure the rear speaker option for '71 was one only, RH side. In '72 two were installed in the rear. These are still available new from GM. Ask for a rear speaker for an '81 Electra. You will need a connector/harness from a later car ..available at any yard. Front speakers I've only ever seen one, regardless of sound system.

So if I have a 1972 Skylark, and no radio in it now (bummer), would it be correct that it COULD have come with a am/fm STEREO? Id like to go back to original period radio, but cant live am only..

In the interest of price, would there be any other buick model or year that would have been potentially correct LOOKING, dont care about model #'s or date codes that may be hidden.

For an A body Buick the 72 model year was the first year in which a stereo AM /FM was available. But it was a rare option.

You may have posted some pics the othere night of some prospects on Ebay. If so, one was a 69 model which unlike 70-72 has "Buick " on the push buttons.

    I heard my name was mentioned;
So I checked the 72 books and there is no mention of a "stereo" wiring harness for a Buick A-body coupe or convertible. For the Buick A-bodies there is only a provision for a single rear speaker, I personally have never seen a 72 with 2 rear speakers, and do not believe they ever existed.

However the books do list a seperate "stereo" wiring harness for the Chevelles, and this harness did go to a second rear speaker, at least for the coupes.

The wiring for stereo in a 72 A body used the front and single rear speakers and not dual rear speakers. Look for #981454 under the Accessories section of the parts books. Obviously they had stereo wiring because they offerred stereo tape players in conjunction with radios.

I have never seen the radio with the stereo light in the face actually installed in a 72 but I had one such radio. I think John Chamberlain still may have a couple. Maybe he can jump in and tell us his experience with this option.

Here is one that Dave Hanlon removed from a 72 GS:

Jim Haas has one in his 72 GS:

I have the 72 stereo radios in about 4 of my 70s and even have a spare! And the weird thing is, even though this was a ultra-rare option which I believe was a "late" 72 option, they had 2 different styles of faces. I've never understood this but I have several of each style. And, no different from the mono radios as far as rear speaker set-up. They too are only set up for one rear speaker and one front.

    Jim,
The "stereo" wiring harness that I am talking about was a seperate wiring harness used on the Chevelles to go between the rear speakers only, and had nothing to do with under-dash components.

According to the 72 factory books (not the Parts Books, which had to do with dealer installations rather then factory installations) this seperate rear harness was not available on the Buicks and they did not come with a second "factory" rear speaker.

Now back to your regularly scheduled program.
