I think a 427 Fairlane in P/S, F/S, or F.A.S.T. would be awesome! Fast and good looking. The research I did a couple years ago indicated that only the 67 was available to the general public, not the 66. Also 67's were only available with a 4 speed. Are you going to be rowing the gears in that top loader, Wayne. That would be COOL! :3gears:

Awesome Joel. Only 57 made in 1966 and yes they had lift off hoods. One ran in July at the Englishtown event and he did great ..ran 13's with a super midrange powerband. It was the medium riser version which was the publicly sold version. Not a drag car but a sold off the dealer lot car....complete with docs.

1967, no more fiberglass lift-off hoods and a couple of hundred sold in the Fairlane / Fairlane 500 style, and as Joel said all 4spds. Most had dual quads, a few single 4 barrels. They were also available in full size Fords,,,but had few takers.

On a now defunct website, there was a pic and a story on a 67 Galaxie 500 with a 427 dual quad 4 speed. One of eight allegedly built. Car had something like 12,500 original miles, and had sat in a barn for quite a long time. Owner was going to restore it....really he was. :Brow: I never saved any pics from that website. :ball:

Well it's getting more interesting,66 may have not been available to the general public, and the 67 had no lift off hood!CRAP! The lift off hood MAKES the car for me!I'll keep digging.

Wayne Rob's car at E-town was bought off the showroom floor. They were available just not plentiful. His car is on the DVD (as you know) we made at the July E-town event. Rob I think even talks about the cars history I believe.

Again he didn't break any new ET records, but I think it was one of the coolest cars that was there. I even felt bad making him get a few guys to help him take the hood off so I could tech it. It was a Pure Stocker in the truest sense of the word, and I am glad he came down.

Wayne, my statments above are not an official ruling, just what I remember from some research a couple years back. If you are SERIOUS about doing a 66, I will spend the time to dig into it further and get and official ruling for you.
Or are you SKEERD to run a 4 Speed???? :moonu: :moonu:

"Factory lightweight cars built for sanctioned drag racing and dealership-built/modified cars are not eligible to participate."

Yes the car had a fiberglass hood, but these were not sanctioned drag race cars nor are they dealership built/modified cars. Race versions:
Ford had a little car called a Comet that used a high riser version of the 427 for that. Those are definitely factory racers.
Ford did have a Fairlane Thunderbolt, that used the high riser version as well. The high riser version had 3" higher intake manifolds & raised intake ports.
The early high risers used dual snorkels to feed in cold air from the grille where the inside headlights were. Because of clearance issues on the later race versions they used a reverse teardrop scoop on the hood. I personally would also consider these factory race cars, as they had to be special ordered.

The medium riser cars bought off the showroom floor did not have any of these problems since the dual quads fit underneath the hood. These also used different much more streetable heads.

    More Fairlane info

My brother emailed me this thread, and I thought I would jump in with a few comments, gleaned from several years of research from many sources. The total number of 1966-67 427 Fairlanes & Comets is somewhere between 300 and 400. The bulk of these are 1967 Fairlanes, 425HP 4 speed cars, the fastback body style. The 1966 427 Fairlanes were mostly fastbacks (a few post cars have been claimed). The 66s came only in white, had rubber floor mats & lightweight buckets (Fawn interiors) and 4 speeds. All had lift-off 4 pin fiberglass hoods. Don't know if any came as 410HP (single 4 bbl) cars, although many were raced that way. Most of the 66s were delivered to dealerships as drag cars, although Joe Blow could buy one, if he made enough noise. These cars were probably delivered with 15 wheels & 8.15X15 tires, although there may have been larger tires optional. The 1967 Fairlanes are a very mixed bag. They came in all body & trim styles and both 410 & 425HP. You could get any exterior paint color. The fiberglass pin hood became an option on the 67 cars. As noted in the NHRA specs, available online, an optional trunk-mounted battery was available. A few automatic cars, sporting the Ford cast aluminum C6 transmission, were made. In fact, that year C/SA class at the NHRA Nationals was won by a 67 427 Fairlane (see the Davis Super Stock book). Early 1967 cars sported 15 wheels, later ones came with 14s. The car I am going to bring to the PSMCD next year, currently missing the interior & glass, is originally an H code car (390 V8, 2bbl) with an automatic, a 1967 Fairlane 500 2dr fastback. I have turned it into a W code clone (410HP 4bbl) 427 with a C6 automatic (same trans that came with the original car). The gearshift remains on the steering column where to the best of my knowledge it came stock. There is a 427 Comet Registry, listed in the Fairlaner magazine, that could tell you more about the Comets. From what I know, the Comets were just as varied as the Fairlanes as to trim & body styles. As to cost to clone, all the money is in the engine, as few really nice 427 sideoiler blocks remain, having all gone into Cobra replicas! I lucked into a September 1966 casting date block & heads. The cast iron exhaust manifolds are not too difficult to find, although they do go around $1500-2000 a pair. They are referred to in Ford circles as the "fan" manifolds, and only went on the 427 Fairlanes & Comets. I hope this clears up some arguements- who knows, maybe it will start some! By the way, my next clone is a 1970 Boss 429 Mustang- once again, all the money is in the engine!

I think Brother Stan is referring to 2-door hardtops when he references 1966 and 1967 Fairlane "fastbacks." (As opposed to 2-door sedans, and distinquished from 1968 and up true Fairlane fastbacks.)

I realize those of us over 50  are losing the battle against the offensive term "Post" to describe a 2-door SEDAN versus an open-sided 2-door HARDTOP, but we'll continue trying to educate you "young 'uns." :TU:

Next thing you know, they'll be telling you there's a pure stock Studebaker runnin' 12's. :eek2:

  14. So tame, your mother can drive it!

I've talked with Mike Ulrey about their 427 4-spd Fairlane pictured in the Larry Davis book. I believe they got it from Ford for $1, and the brothers actually had their mom drive it on the street for transportation with a 5.-something gear ratio! Mike said one of two things would happen after making a pass at the strip: he either couldn't get the door open to get out of the car, or the door would open and then just bounce when he closed it. Seems she was flexing a bit...

    Yet more Fairlane info

Wayne, I have corresponded with a gentleman in New Westminster, BC, Canada, name is Bob Nottingham, who took delivery of an original 1966 427 Fairlane hardtop (are you happy, Bob?)! He emailed me some photos of a 1967 427 Fairlane trunk mounted battery installation. Of course I can't find them now, but his email is Bob_Nottingham@telus.net. Very nice gentleman, his son did a 67 427 R-code clone (425HP) that was very complete, down to the radio delete dash.

I also have some copies of original ford factory documents concerning the 427 Fairlanes that I would be glad to send you.

As far as my car, I intend to run it at least the first year as a 410HP, may convert it to 425HP later. I chose the single 4bbl as an easier tuning engine. Actually it is harder to build the 410HP clone because everything is made for the 425HP engine (fuel log, repop manifold, pre-bent fuel lines).

If you decide to build a Fairlane, feel free to contact me, I can put you in touch with suppliers. spalma@forsiteprop.com

Send me the docs you have on the 67 Fairlane,I'll get in touch with the guy in BC also.I really appreciate your help! Was the trunk mounted battery a dealer option or factory installed?A factory option list for the 67 would be great.

    Wayne,

From the GENESIS web site ......

AND, the Genesis block is 30 lbs. heavier than a factory block, so no crying about it being a lightweight.

Can't wait to see the ruling on whether that baby is F.A.S.T. legal........ :bglasses: :beer

So many bore and stroke options .... so little time .....

I have been told it is F.A.S.T legal. But I plan on running this car in Pure Stock, still waiting for approval on that. Not sure if my emails are getting to Dan and Bob,might just call those guys.I'm sticking with the Vette in F.A.S.T.For now anyways.

I doubt the new 427 block will be legal in F.A.S.T,it allowes more boring and stroking than the original did. We'll see.
