Does anyone know a vendor who sells the '67 Buick center cap that resembles Chevy's rally center cap?

CW are you looking for the rally center cap used on 67 and 68 Skylark/GS with disk brakes? This Center cap, the pot metal part is different than the regular center cap. I am not sure anyone is making this. I do have some, Not sure I have a full set of the bezels. If you are interested let me know and I can pos a picture. Thanks Bill Sangster.

    Sounds good...

If you could put up a pic that'd be great just to make sure we're on the same page. Then we'll go from there. Thanks.

Ithink you could make a set from chevy rally caps and repro buick centers. The hard part would be brushing the area on the Chevy cap that should be brushed on a Buick cap.

I have a special interest in this topic as I have a 67 with disc brakes. Duane wrote an article on the topic of wheels in the March 2003 Build Sheet. Here is an excerpt relating to the rallye wheels:

Starting in 1967 front disc brakes became optional on all GM
a-bodies. For the 1967 and 1968 model years the front calipers
were of the dual piston type, like the ones used on Corvettes. These
disc calipers extended further outward from the front spindles then
the drum brake equipped cars and created clearance problems for
    all existing factory wheels.
Buick solved this problem by using Chevrolet Rally Wheels
that were disc brake compatible. These wheels came with standard
Chevrolet Rally trim rings, but used a Buick only center cap.
Wheels for 1967 models carried an application code of DG, for the
1968 model year the code was changed to XB. These wheels are
identical to wheels found on other Chevrolets of the same year and
have a 4-3/8 backspace. Unlike Chevrolet Rally Wheels the Buick
versions were painted to match the color of the car. However, there were 2 notable exceptions; (1) all 1967 GS
340s had red rally wheels and, (2) some light colored cars, such as white, appear to have come with black
wheels. This was probably to keep the wheels from looking dirty due to brake dust.

I have a set of these rims from a '68 GS400, the original color of that car was Blue Mist. The rims were also Blue Mist, when I took the tires off of the rims the inside of the rim was also this color. I could not find any trace of of argent silver anywhere, it looked like a factory job (possibly dealer) or someone went through the trouble of sand blasting the wheels and repainting them inside and out. The wheels looked to be original with the Blue paint. :Do No:

I would love to see some factory documentation on this subject and hopefully it will turn up someday :Do No:

Here is a '69 GS advertisement with the rims painted black. Funny thing is that these rims were not an option in '69  So I guess you cannot base any color arguments on this.
I have also seen a black and white '67 GS400 article that the rims appear to be painted black in the center.

67fitz, are you the original owner of your car?

    67

I owned a 67 with the disk brake option. It was an original 67 special with disk brakes. The rims where painted the body color with the full hub caps over them. I think I just saw several weeks ago a car on ebay that was optioned the same way. I think it would be a hard rule to say something absolutely didn't come that way.

    Clyde

In fact I was able to find it HERE. I can't say for sure the hubcaps here are original but the rims are body color.

    67/8 Buick Ralley caps

CW I found 4 bezels and one cap and 4 pads that hold the centers in place. They are driver quaity, good chrome except one has nick on face and minor pits on ribs. I will take $100 for all. The picture is of a rally bezel and and a regular one. The rallay is about 1/4" shorter and has different mounting screws. Thanks Bill Sangster.

    wheel color

This subject has been beat to death, it was the consensus of several of the top 67 "A" body minds including Marvin Shives, myself(BCA 1967 Tech Advisor) and the late Larry Miller that 67's are to be argent silver except for the GS340 - this info was collected from original cars, original cars still owned by original owners, factory pictures, etc - it has also been noted that some were painted at the dealer to match per owners request or dealr trying to spice up cars, but from the factory they came silver.

I have a set of wheels that came off a 1967 GS400 that was red and the wheels were painted to match the car. The inside were also red. These have not been repainted and the spare is the same color. They need to be repainted since one wheel is rusting. Thanks

  20. BUQUICK

    BUQUICK I'm your huckleberry.

Blue Mist wheels for me too Mike Trom

I just stumbled on this thread today and since it has already been taken off track from the original question I guess I will add my 2 cents.

We purchased our '67 GS 400 in 1988, it was stock, and basically untouched and the wheels were painted body color, Blue Mist. I have only spoken to owners back as far as the early 80's but he said they we blue when he got it. I dismounted the tires and the wheels were painted blue in the area cover by the tires. DEFINITELY looked like a factory job. No signs of gray primer like most people would use at home or at a body shop. Plus I can assue you that no dealer is going to dismount tires if they were painting the rims on a new '67 Buick.

Also, in the early 90's I saw a '67 Special 4-door driven by a little old lady that was Blue Mist and it was a disc brake car and had body colored (blue) rims, she said it had always been that way.

Until we see some factory documentation I still say that at least some colors were used on the disc brake wheels, Blue Mist is one for sure (code F).

"My3Buicks" on this board, sent me an unsolicited email a couple of years ago telling me that I didn't know what I was talking about and that the 3 '67 experts in this world say my wheels should be Argent. I respectfully disagree. And if I ever stop racing my '67 and decide to give it the restoration it deserves, I will paint my wheels blue because I truely believe this is correct for a Blue Mist disc brake car.

The fact that SO MANY cars have surfaced with body colored rims should tell us all something. In fact I have seen more body colored over the years than Argent rims. Surely someone has some Buick documentation that will shead some light on the subject.
