So that could be tires too dry, or not enough speed.

How are you doing your burnout.

I know ppl will tell you not to start in 1st gear on a th400 but after 20 years I've never flipped a spray.

I start in M1 spin up to a out 5k, with 4.30 gears doesn't take much.....ease off **** to M2 back up to 5k......when I feel it start to pull down I slide out till it sounds about to hook and i lift b4 it hooks. I know ppl shift into 3rd but I don't feel need to be spinning tires 100mph in the box

Why is it that you're not supposed to do a burnout in manual first gear and only in auto mode? What if your trans is beefed up (like mine is now) with 34 element sprag and a bunch of race quality parts?

I roll thru water and out of it by a foot or so. I do mine in drive (1-2-3) 4000 to break loose and run up to 4500-4800 rpm, let go of line lock, lean into it as it grabs coming out but lift just as front end lifts.
Works for me many, many passes....

Many ppl say to start your burnout in 2nd....there is a chance in flipping the sprag on the 1-2 shift ......even with the upgraded sprag. It has something to do with the speeds vrs load in the burnout.

I tried 1 time to start my burnout in 2nd.......maybe I just needed to beat on it more but never again for me.

How do you start a burnout in 2nd? How does the ST400 allow for that?

I've got over 1000 10sec passes on a T400 that I won at a raffle in BG going 1-2-3 in burnout. But I'm going like half throttle not floored like some SBC guys do with low torque.

Yeah, how do you start in 2nd without a manual valve body. Fact is you don't need to do that much of a burnout with drag radials. I leave it in drive. It doesn't take that much to get them going after they are wet. I hit it about halfway on the throttle. Once I see smoke on both sides, I ease off of it and roll out to the tree. We don't need 6 grand burnouts.

I just wanted to make sure you were not......I know they say to.....but in a heavy car doing so could cause wheel hop.

Without a manual vb you can not start in 2and but if you gave the level in M2 it could be up shifting very early causing the same effect.

The 1 time I tried in mine even with my big gears my car pushed real hard and hopped......maybe I just didn't bear on it hard enough, but I've never had an issue going 1-2. I've never used 3rd either.......never had the need for that much speed. 5k for me works well. It's a out where my converter flashes too so it doesn't take much and its right there in 1st gear anyways

For air cleaner I use a duel snorkle 5.0 HO air cleaner off a mustang. It fits by not using a stud in carb but a tapered allen bolt. Also have breathers at rear of valve covers. Its on a quadjet b4b. You can also lower your engine mounts by 5/16 with a little grinding. 5/16 dosent seem like much but when thats all you need its perfect.

I shift into 2nd when I roll into the burnout box.
Starting your burnout with the shift selector in 2nd does not mean you are beginning the burnout in 2nd, just that the trans will shift automatically from 1st to 2nd without the risk of hitting rev limiter or reving too high ,too quickly.
You just have to remember to shift into 1st if you manually shift thru the gears before lighting that second light or the trans will short shift from 1st to 2nd again when leaving the line, unless ypu have gone thru your governor and are relying on it to shift for you......Jim

Great question. I think the 430 is getting tired

Or the oil that I cooked on to the headers is still clearing itself off

Yeah, prob oil on headers getting super heated. Be easy on timing on the old girl or at least add some 110 when racing. Detonation can cause rings to have a hard time sealing if the piston is being hammered.....

I mixed in 2.5 gallons of 98 octane with a 1/4 tank, and timing was 32* on one run, then 33* on the rest.

Run cool? No more than 1/4 on stock gauge?

Exactly, 1/4 all the time on the street, 1/3 to nearly 1/2 on the highway.
