OK Guys, I have had another request for a 68-72 4-speed lower shifter boot-retaining ring so I started digging around the garage and found enough aluminum to make 6 more. (I thought I used up all the material the last time, but I didnt.) I have no intention of buying any more of this material so this will hopefully be the last time I will offer them. The cost is $45.00 each for the part with shipping included to anywhere in the continental US. (They take 3-4 hours to form by hand, so they are a gift at this price.) One piece is already spoken for, so this would leave 5 for sale. If you are interested in one of these parts, let me know. Below is a picture of an original, mine look the same except they are hand formed from aluminum. Duane
Duane, I'd like one as well, if you have any left. PM me or reply to this thread when you have a chance. Thnaks!
OK, That means 5 are now sold, and I have a tentative sale for the last one. I will know if it's sold within the next few days. I will PM everyone my info, and thanks again guys. Duane
I know you said they are all sold but I just want to know is this ring used with a console equiped car? If so and if anyone backs out then let me know, thanks. Please answer the first ques even if they are not available just for my own knowledge. Allen allioop108@aol.com
Guys, OK, here is how the 68-72 Buick shifter boots went, For cars without consoles, They came with a thick shifter boot that was attached directly to the floor pan by the ring that I am making. This thicker shifter boot had a lip that protruded over top of the carpet, so once the carpet was installed, the boot covered up the edge and made it look finished. For cars with consoles, They came with a thinner (different shaped) lower boot that was attached directly to the floor pan by the same ring that I am making. This lower boot was there to keep out the dirt, noise. etc from getting into the interior. Then the console had another round boot attached to it to finish everything off and make it look nice. Both the non-console and console cars came with the same hump welded to the floorpan. That's why this retainer ring works for both console and non-console cars. I sure hope someone tucks this info away so I don't have to ever type it again. Now that answers Allen's first question, as to the other, believe me all 6 are sold, and 3 more if I wanted to keep making them. Duane
George, I can't swear to that. I really don't know the early GS's too well, so I usually stay away from quoting anything for them. I do have people telling me that the 66 Olds 442's used the same parts, but I can't verify that. If someone had an original 67 ring and or boot and sent it to me I could match it up with what I have and verify it. Otherwise I have no way to do it. Maybe Walt Kilgus knows, he is into 66's pretty heavy, or possibly Jim Shiels. Duane
George, I have often wondered if Buick re-used the same hump for the 68-72 cars as they had for the earlier 64-67 cars. They made so few 4-speed cars that I figured it would make sense to keep what they had. That's how GM made it's money for years, they recycled parts/tooling all the time. Why spend money re-tooling for something they already had. I have a few early assembly manuals, and will see if these pieces are included on the drawings. I have the numbers from the 68-72 assembly manuals, if the part numbers are the same, that should give us the answer. Duane
George, I checked the shifter boot/retainer ring part numbers and the 68-72's all had the same part numbers, but the 67 part numbers were different. I guess that's where the split was. Duane
And the upper boot, for a '66: Who sells the correct repo of the boots??? Are the Parts place repo's correct?
George....Before I bought one of Duane's retaining rings, I saw that OPG was repopping the 67 ring. It looked identical in the picture. I took a chance and bought one. Well, it was totally different and did not fit. Its sitting in my glovebox. Next time I see you and I have the 70 GS with me, remind me and I'll give it to you. Its not doing me any good.
