Define "correct" I guess. I imagine it would depend on where it was made- Flint or a GMAD plant. Im sure GM had more than one vendor for certain parts. What was in the bin that day the car was being made?

Wondering if it was original to the car when it left the factory. I have seen some 69 GS 400 cars with this cap and others with the cap without the red tag. This is the only low mileage car, I have seen that had the cap, and was only a few years old, I purchased the car from the original owner, bac in 1972. I have also seen this cap on 442 cars.

The 69 Assembly Manual actually calls out 2 different ones for the 350-400 A-bodies, and labels them as optional. It does not specify them beyond that. Therefore you could have gotten either one on a 69 A-body.

I guess the one you got depended on what they had in stock at the time. I posted a few pics of the page in the assembly manual so you can see what I mean.

One thing you will notice in the above pics is that the above page was first used on the 68 model year. You often find this with the assembly manuals. That would have been the date the page was entirely re-written and first used in the assembly manuals. Previous to that another page was used.

Then when a piece on the drawing needed revised they would assign it a letter "A,B,C" etc. show what was revised on the drawing, and call out exactly what changed in the revision block at the top right of the page. They would continue to use the same page until a big chunk of it needed revised, or it needed to be re-numbered, and then would make another "replacement" drawing.

If you took the time to go thru all the revision blocks on the above page you could figure out exactly how a 68 car was built just after Dec 27, 1967.
    Enjoy.

These assembly manuals are GOLD. I had no idea how important they were until I was trying to rebuild a car that was missing 40% of the parts....

...and thanks to Duane for taking time out of this build to make sure I'm on the right track with the X project. 2-3 calls a day for the last week or so :D

    Alan,
Yes, I talked to Nick yesterday and he said he had it and it looked very nice. I want to thank you for selling it to me at such a reduced price. It was a pure gift. Let me know how you want paid.

Waiting on a few parts now, but once they are in we can start going to town again.

    Adam,
Just trying to pay back the time I "stole" from your project to get my Stainless buffed, and help you and Mike out.
I do almost know your address by heart now.:D:D

    Hey Duane,
If you ever decide to make a copy of that note book of yours, I would absolutely be a buyer.
Your parts code book is a huge hit with my GTO buddy.
I just finished the Motion book. Fun read.

    OK,
I have a small update on the car.

Dave Tumas sent me a working 69 AM radio and I had another radio from Gene Hill and parts from a 3rd one from Nick, so I took pieces from all 3 and put together a radio. The face plate is really nice and I polished up a set of buttons, so it looks really nice.

I am including some pics of the radio knobs. The 70-72 style knobs are all chrome and are shorter then the 69 knobs. (One of the pics shows the differences.) Anyway I have a bunch of the 70-72 knobs but will have to see if I have any good 69 knobs.

I can always cut the black part off the bad 69 knobs and put them on the bottom of the 70-72 pieces to re-create the 69 knobs if I have to. I will have to check to see what I have in stock.

Nick also finally got the rear bumper delivered. He said it looks very nice, so that will be going together really soon. Just took forever to get it here.

We are still waiting on some other parts but they should be here in a couple of weeks, After that it should come together pretty fast. That's when you will start seeing the differences between a regular GS and the Motion car.

So THAT's the difference in knobs! I always noticed the difference but never knew why. I thought it was a big car/ intermediate thing. I have a large selection of radio knobs. I'll take a look

    Jason,
Thanks for looking for me. It sure would be nice to get a 69 set instead of trying to lose a knuckle on the grinder.

I think Wild Bill said they were the same for 68 & 69.

Just took a look, and most of my knobs have the black spacer. Ive bought and sold a ton of 70-72 radios and parted out several 70-72 cars. Still have a good 8-10 radios in the collection. So it seems odd I would have so many 68-69 knobs? Out of my collection, I only have three short ones that you say are 70-72.

How about I trade you? I'll send you the 2 picks of the litter of my extensive 68-69 knob collection and you send me 2 70-72's?

    Deal.
I might be wrong but all I seem to have are the shorter ones that are all Chrome, and as far as I know all my parts are 70-72. The only ones I have with the black extensions are the ones Dave Tumas sent me with the radio, and all he has are 69 parts.

Maybe someone else can chime in on this one.

    Duane .
‘68 has the short all chrome . 70-72 Black extenders . I don’t have a ‘69 to compare but only difference I know of is the ‘68 silver / ‘69 black flip dial colors .

    Topcat Got TORQUE?

Here is a set that were on the car that had the 69 console i just sold......pulled the radio knobs when i got the console.
Notice that on the radio that the right side tuning shaft does not have a fader so the adjuster behind the knob has a smaller hole and is not keyed plus it does not have the tab on it........
