My late father 30 years ago wanted to mount a set of guages at eye level so he removed the AM radio speaker and mounted them there He did all the metal and bracket work himself Since the factory AM quit working 30 years ago and we went with an AM/FM cassette (which up until 5 years ago worked) the speaker was not used
Mine does not have AC, So I plan on taking out the old plastic piece right above the radio and making a nice piece of SS to fit in there. It will hold my temp, volt and oil pressure.
How about mounting the pods just above the rear view mirror? Pods screw right into the headliner beam.
Hey Steve yep thats OLD BLUE safely tucked away, one of these days. How did you make out with your manifolds saw another post of yours everthing OK
Manifolds are fixed now, bought another set ('64's this time, cleaner-looking) from our buddy Glenn Biggers, and again enlisted the learned help of the magnanimous Jim Weise on installation, just this past sunday. Sounds great now! Best, Steve.
that's good to hear, Glenn is a good guy. Wish we could of spent some time with you guys when we picked up the Sportwagons as always keep in touch
Since were on the subject of gauges does anyone have anyideas on where to mount a tach on a 65 with column shift? Also nailed did you make your gauge holder yourself? Was it difficult? Thanks, Philip
guage panel I had a 64 lark that I took out the radio , speaker grill and a/c vent and then made a aluminum panel to fit the whole right side of the dash pod. Then i finished the panel with med. sand paper running in straight lines across, cut holes and mounted tach, and 4 guages. Looked factory.
What size tach is that D-Con and how is it mounted? Also where the radio panel is, do you have to cut that out?
I dont smoke, so I took a small 6000 autometer tach and placed it right infront of the cigaret lighter, ( I removed the lighter and ran the wires behind it) Looks totaly clean.
My problem is that I have A/C so I don't think i take out the radio are and make it look good.I liked d-con's way of doing it but my dash extends all the way across the car.
Mine being a 64, it is a little different. I drilled the face for the gauges and opened them up a little for the Auto-Meter angle cups. The panel is actually 2-piece so you have to drill the face-plate through to the main dash piece. The tach is 4" or so. I can't measure it as it is 150 mi away from me at the moment.
Well I finally cut the dash tonite. what do you think? I am installing auto meter 2 1/16 gauges in my 64 skylark convertible and decided it was now or never. I was worried the holes would not be spaced evenly from the top and the space between them would be off. I measured them after and they are all within .015 or better. I think they will look great installed! Adam what size are those angled cups? I think that would be cool if I could some how use them? Thanks for the pictures!!!!!!!
Wow,thats looks good!Is that a stock 64 radio area? That looks alot better than the 65's if it is.How do you guys with the aluminum panels attach it to your dash?Or maybe I should ask it this way,how is it secured?? Thanks, Philip
