It is a standard color for a 71 GS (43437 body style) so there is no "SCO" in the paint area of the firewall tag. The low body number designates the car as a "special car order" but the SCO was not for the exterior paint color. Duane
Got it thanx Duane. So if you ordered a GSX you could get it in any 71 GS color? Were there any SCO paints on GSX in 71 that you know of. I can think the Black one
No you don't have it quite yet. ONLY the 1972 GSX's could have been ordered in ANY color, not 1971's. The ID plates we are referring to here are Fisher Body tags (not Buick), and they go by body style, therefore, For the 1971 (43437) body style we know the following info; 1. There were (?#) of standard colors available. 2. If a model (43437) came with a different color, ie. a special order color such as Hugger Orange etc, then an SCO would have been issued for the car, and (for 71 cars) frequently the SCO would be placed in the paint area of the tag. (This is not what happened to this particular car because it is a standard 43437 color.) 3. 1971 GSX's were only available in 6 colors, White, Cortex Gold, Platinum Mist, Bittersweet Mist, Lime Mist, and Stratomist Blue. 4. All 71 GSX's were SCO cars. 5. If a 71 GSX was ordered in a color other then the above 6 available colors then it would have had to be done in addition to the SCO for a GSX. So far we have been able to prove there were 2 Special Order "Paint" GSX's produced. Brad Conley owns the Black one (proved by the Buildsheet) and Karen Miller owns the Red one. (I believe this was proved by D. Kleiner as he found original striping on the car before he restored it. You would need to check with him on this.) To sum this up, all we know for sure about this particular car is it was an SCO car. We don't know why it needed to be an SCO car, because the exterior/interior color combo would not have required it, and the options seen on the car did not seem to require it, so that's where we are at. Maybe it was ordered as a regular GS with a front or rear spoiler, maybe there is some other (per Buick) "non-desirable" option combination that forced it to be an SCO, again we don't know ......................................................................or maybe it was ordered in that color as a striped GSX, again we don't know. Very interesting reading. Have to say this photo says it all. It was nice to see every color known represented. Note: The white X was in primer not in the photo, as it is under restoration, but it was there at the GSX Reunion with the others.
Take a look at these pictures and see what you think of the stripes. Well I guess I am not able to post pictures I took, can't get it to upload.
Ric, so you were the guy I was elbowing on the grandstands to get that pic I have that one too and its a great picture. I have a low shot with the front 1/4 shot of all them. I understand there is another white X in NY that was just bought by a well known member. Actually I hear he stole it.
Good finally got em! The GSX decal was taped off when the right lower quarter was painted from stripe down. If you look inside of the gsx decal that is factory paint. The left quater was replaced and no date code is present. The deck lid also was replaced only at a different time. Still alot to learn.
Underbody sound deadener removed, underbody cleaned. sealed, minor repair, primed and recoated with "Rhino" coating.
