looking to see if these lil motors make any decent power. at least lo 13's. can it be done with manifolds in a 70 skylark/GS?
Im sure It can be done, (and has) we have alot of good parts from our Buick vendors. Our cylinder heads are basically whats holding back the rest of the potential of the engine. The stock heads when ported flow very well for an iron head that was developed 30 plus years ago, BUT theres been alot of advancement in cylinder head design since then, the least of which is the factory iron Vortech head for Chevy! Mark
Mark from my cylinder head man he says these heads small buick look good. they have tall ports as do LS1. they have a nice swirl intake port by the bowl that leads into the chamber like the vortecs. the engine has a long stroke to it. so no one is making any power with these. I see Lee Zane is running well in stock eliminator. what will it take to go fast with this combo, for the street I am working on.. are there really any good cam designs to match the head. we have the nice ta or poston intakes. we have 1 5/8 or1 3/4 headers depending on your rpm band and some other factors. I personally have a .030 1970 buick, cast high rpm heads. ta intake. ported 1970 heads with ta stainless valves. the rest is up in the air. the piston is .060 in the hole and needs a block mill. the block needs the oil passage drilled to 9/16 to match the timing cover for good oil flow.Mike at ta says use the 310 cam if I buy headers or the c110 if I keep manifolds. I would expect full sideways launches on the street with either cam and more top end of course with the 310. I just want to make sure its possible to make power before I spend anymore on this lil engine. My combo I believe should be good for mid to lo 13's or I will be disappointed that I didn't use the brand c power plants available.
yes grasshopper, it is so... The Buick 350 can be made to perform nicely and still run on the street. I've driven this combo on several 200+ mile round trips and even drove it to the GS Nats in Columbus, OH. Over 1100 miles one way!! Raced it for four days, backed the timing down a little, evened out the air bags, and drove it back home! I'm running a '69 block, .030 over TRW forged slugs, TA 290-94H cam, mild porting on heads, TA headers, stock intake manifold w/a quadrajet, stock points distributor, shift kit in a TH350, and stock 3.23 10 bolt posi on P215-70-14 series radial tires. This mild combo has run 13.85 @98mph with a 2.0 60' time in 90 degree heat in my 3700lb (with me in it) '69 GS California. I haven't checked compression but bet I could squeeze a couple more points out of it by checking the piston depth. Add an aluminum intake and a beefier ignition system, a decent set of tires that hook and change from the 3.23 to a 3.73 gear and it should run even better. There are several others on this board running quicker 350s than mine. I hope to see a bunch of them at the BPG Nats!!
I have the 310 cam in mine, its an awesome cam, but you do need more than the stock compression. I had my deck cut .050 to get a .005 deck height. My pistons are Sterling HT522NP, which are suppose to be 9.2 to 1 at .020 deck height. My heads were also cut .030 and have the bigger TA stainless valves, with porting and bowl work. The 350 Buick is a VERY underated engine, my build up is very streetable in the heat of traffic, and on long highway runs also, as gscalifornia said. My build up, with the above stuff, plus the TA intake, headers, full exhaust, TCI convertor, 3.42 rear, it will smoke 'em thru second gear:grin: and pull hard to 6000rpm Mark
My 197- Skylark 350 runs 13.52 @ 100MPH. 10:1 comp.old SP1 cam, pocket ported heads,TA Stage 1 intake, stage 1 valves,Hooker super competition headers,TH350 trans, shift kit and ATI 2800 converter,373 gears,800 Q-jet carb, stinger s-4 ignition,3" exhaust with H-pipe, Car idles at 700rpm, very reliable, would drive it coast to coast, very basic mods all built as a "package". I could probably get more out of it, but I like it just the way she is,more of a "show car now,but still rip her up when the big block car is down:Smarty:
Nice car!! Looks like the high beams are missing, might there be a ram air setup in there ??:Brow: I picked up almost .2 and 2mph changing from an H-pipe to an X-pipe with the 2 1/2" exhaust on my 350. It also quieted the cruise speed exhaust note to almost nill. Still roars loud at wide-open though!
That's right, Kenny has a home made ram air system under that hood, Come on Kenny, stop teasing the boys:laugh: show em an under the hood picture:Brow:
That missing left hi beam is a true trade mark idea. I did the same thing to my 80 wagon. It really does make a difference when all your car breaths is nice cool fresh out side air. And with newer headlights you don't really need 4.
Holly manchester! That setup is bitter-sweet!:jd: Sweet car and set-up! BTW, speaking of fast 350's, what about sonny's car? He has the world's fastest All steele buick 350, he runs mid or low 10's in the quarter i think. I don't have any pics of his car though. Oh well, isn't he supposed to be at the nats this year?o No: -Cody
the car looks good. I think I pitted next to you a few years back at E Town at the Buick nats. you had the red car then. I had the bammboo cream GS 350 . It went 15.2 at 90 mph with mainly stock hurt engine. and 273 peg leg rear. maybe there is hope. anyone use the poston 114 cam. it says it works with manifolds. I do have a ta intake so it should help cool the intake charge to help stop detination. I had a big problem with that previously and bad valve guides leaking major oil into chambers.
Kenny What are the specs on your cam if you Please? Also what altitude do you live at? I was hoping to have a high 13's 350 until It blew up 30 miles after a rebuild.
Ahhh sweet Ken. I didn't notice you had duals at first. I just have a single left side as I don't have or made a dual snorkle air cleaner housing. Yet.
Jason, spec's on the 350 sp1 cam are intake lift-490 exhaust-488 intake dur.230 exhaust-242 centerline is110* lobe sep is 114 I think englishtown is a few hundred feet above sea level My local track here on Long Island is pretty close to sea level.:Smarty:
