It was cloudy here in SA and I didn’t have very high expectations but when it got dark I went out to see it. The clouds cleared just as it reached totality and I was able to see it for a few seconds. The clouds moved in again, it started to brighten, and a few minutes later they opened up again enough to see the partial coverage. Then more clouds and it was over. Afterwards I was disappointed and thought about all of the hype leading up to this. Maybe if it had been clearer it would have been different but I thought about how people had planned trips to come here from such distances for years. On the news people were interviewed from Germany, England, Luxembourg, Mexico City (not far from where it started), Spain, one family drove from Oregon, to come to south Texas to experience this for 1-4 minutes if the weather cooperated. Small towns saw their populations double. I’m sorry but I don’t get it. Yes, it was impressive with the sky going dark and being able to see the event but I thought it would last longer and leave a bigger impression. I’m wondering what the businesses that were selling t-shirts that read “I got mooned in Texas on April 8, 2024” are going to do with the unsold ones. Again, it was an impressive sight but I wouldn’t go further than my back door to see another.

I have wondered b4. Why a plane making a trail just stops.......or why the trails linger in place but the clouds get blown away

    TrunkMonkey Totally bananas

Winds aloft are in multiple layers as are temps, and moving in various directions and speeds in relation each other.
You can be flying straight and level and cross several streams of moving air of changing temps. All of those can affect both clouds and contrails, and from the perspective of looking from the ground, the differences of distances between clouds and contrails can be significant, but appear to be at the same altitude.

And temps, moisture, pressure all affect formation of contrails, so an aircraft can pass through places that are conducive to contrails or unable to support creation on a given trajectory.

(Spent a few thousand hours up there all around the world.)

Contrails are caused by all jets flying at altitude but they normally dissipate behind the jet....not hang on across the whole sky for hours and spread into each other.....i live 10 miles from a at one time nuclear armed Air Force base(reserve now but active)......been watching the sky for a long time here.....

Piston engined aircraft create contrails as well.

According to NASA and their satellites taking photos from above, 4-6 hours isn't abnormal, and up to 14 hours is possible under the right humidity conditions. The dryer the air, the less time they stay together (seconds or minutes).
It had to suck seeing them behind your bomber flying over Europe - nothing but a straight line to you and your friends for the anti-aircraft gunners to use as aiming aids.

My experience… I have definitely been planning this for at least five years. I knew I would be retired and so would my wife. We could get up and drive to it without missing any work. I had originally planned to camp out at Brookville lake in Southeastern Indiana. That was my plan right up to the morning of making the reservations at the campground six months ago. And then I thought… What if the weather is crappy the morning of the eclipse? Then we would be dragging a camper and camping gear someplace that had better weather. I figured we’d be better off staying with my brother-in-law in Cincinnati. We could drive north, about an hour, and that would be the easiest plan, or we could drive a couple hundred miles away in either direction. Luckily we didn’t have to. Just like wild Bill, we woke up Monday morning and the sky was beautiful!!! Yay!
I wanted to go to a little town on the Ohio/Indiana border, Union City, population 1,100. I didn’t want to go where there was going to be a festival. I wanted a quiet little town where I could get the maximum amount of time during totality. Union City fit that description. My brother-in-law, wanted to go to a closer town in Indiana, Connersville. It would be 15 seconds less of totality, and it was a much bigger town. To me, bigger town meant more people. No thank you. So Monday morning as we were getting ready to leave I flat out told him, I want to go to Union City! That’s where we went. It was about 90 miles away due north, and we took all back roads to get there. Absolutely zero traffic! We stopped at the local McDonald’s to get a snack and let my wife go to the bathroom. We didn’t know where the next bathroom would be. While I was inside waiting to get a bite to eat I heard, an employee yell, “There’s people from Florida out there in the parking lot!” Too funny! I guess they never had someone from South Florida visit their little town. We are standing outside in the parking lot by the car eating our sandwiches and discussing where we were going to go. I remembered that I had Google Earthed the town of Union City, and there was a nature sanctuary just a couple miles away. We went there. 32 acres of forest in the middle of nowhere. Well actually, farmland. We were the second person or Car to arrive. An older couple, oh crap, that’s what I am, was already there setting up their cameras. We were early so we went and took the three-quarter mile hiking trail through the woods. It was very cool to see, and a nice stretch after driving. We got back to the car and unloaded our chairs and cooler. It was a flat out beautiful day! Way warmer than I expected, getting to a high of 73°, and totally blue skies except for the jet contrails that wild Bill had talked about. Fortunately, when the time came to gaze at the sun with our super duper solar glasses you could see right through the contrails. We ended up with maybe 25 people at this park. A couple families with their children and then a bunch of old farts. The guy next to us had been to the 2017 solar eclipse. He explained in great detail what we should see, and what we should be looking for. It was so quiet in this wildlife sanctuary. You could hear people whispering loudly as the sun got smaller and smaller. We were jokingly having bets which way the moon was coming from. The guy next to us was actually watching it on his phone as it was happening down in Texas. He knew which direction the moon was coming from but I didn’t want to know. As it was getting darker and darker we actually heard roosters doing their evening cock a doodle do. I heard other people on this thread say this, and it is definitely worth repeating, flat out unbelievable how much sunlight comes from a tiny little sliver of the sun!!! It definitely got darker, but it didn’t get dark until that last little sliver went away. As soon as totality happened we were able to take off our super duper solar glasses and look directly at the sun. Oh what a sight!!!
I saw the diamond at the beginning and the end of totality. Beautiful! My pictures flat out suck but what I saw with my eyes was unbelievable! We took the time to look at the horizon 360°. The awesome orange glow all around the horizon was very cool. I’m pretty sure we saw the “beads” around the sun. We did NOT see the crescent shapes of light from the sun’s light going through the trees. The smart guy next to us said that the trees need to have leaves in order to do that. This forest was still bald from winter. Bummer.
As the sun began to reappear some people actually started packing up and leaving? We stayed right till the end just like a drive-in movie theater, or a NASCAR race. Well worth it! As it was ending we broke out our sandwiches that we had made and had a really good lunch discussing how cool it was. Oh yeah, the air definitely started warming back up. I had forgotten that it cooled down and you definitely felt it. The sunlight was out for a while and then all of a sudden the air started warming up. Awesome! Going back to Cincinnati on all back roads was the way to go. Absolutely no traffic!
Things I found out that I did not know. My brother-in-law told me he really didn’t give a crap about the solar eclipse, and that’s why he wanted to go to a town that was much closer even if the period of totality was going to be much less. He told me, he was actually very glad that we went where we were. He told me he thought it was awesome and I agreed!

The highway we took to the nature sanctuary was so busy! So busy you could take a nap in the road and never get run over. :) 87B00A6B-2AF3-4F8B-8343-1A07DB2E5991.jpeg 71A90714-432C-4C40-97F2-89913E202A6E.png 76C8FD4F-AE9B-44BD-8577-3BEA4F8F6350.jpeg

When we first got to the sanctuary we took the three-quarter mile walk into the woods. Very nice! B03462E9-B9F5-4A1C-9B3E-62916E5AA72E.jpeg 01D88579-F07E-45D5-9636-AB8A13400064.jpeg F285AD8D-7280-45AC-9353-2E672E410349.jpeg

Fernando, it was definitely beer 30! (If you look closely it was dooby time also) My wife drove there and drove back. All I had to do was keep my eyes open and a big smile on my face.

Very often the WW2 bombers would change altitudes if they thought that they could get rid of the contrails. Contrails are a bullseye to a bomber.
