Does anyone have a set of good or better armrest base plates for a 68 skylark convertible? Just none cracked or chunks missing.
Reid I do not have any nice one's and was also looking for some. I was told that ones off 70 big Chev would work and that The Parts Place had a reproduction. The difference is the repro does not have the same finish by the handle. Also I did see a set on ebay that were made of Alu or SS but did not follow up on either of these. Thanks. Bill.
For reference these pics are from a 69 Chevy Kingswood. Chevy's don't come much bigger than that.
Thanks 197064, but those are too short for my car. Bill, the onse you saw on ebay are real nice. The guy repros them himself. Only thing is he usually has a reserve, and a buy it now, both are around $200.
Jerry I did not remember the cost of the repros but did remember they were very nice. I am not sure I will step up for the $200.00 when I get ready for them but I wonder the cost of plating an orginal set? I was thinking the 2 door 69/70 Impala had longer ones but not sure. the arm rest from our cars are about 16 1/4 inches in length. Thanks Bill
Does your car use the long bases (approx 16") AND long armrest assemblies also? Or is it a long chrome base with a shorter armrest base/pad (thus leaving the chrome forward of the door handle exposed)?
So yours have the "exposed" area around the door handle with the ribbed aluminum plate/insert I assume. I'll bet you could get a pair rechromed for reasonanble $$$. I remember when the repro short chrome bases came out...they priced them pretty close to whatever Mr G's was charging for rechroming old ones.
I agree Bill, that is why I haven't bought them yet. I might break down and buy a set this winter when the car is put away. I have some other things I need to do to the door panels this winter anyway. KNow anything about the platic chrome stripes that are on the door panels? Do you know of anything that can replace those when the chrome penstripe sticker starts to come off? I don't want to replace the panels just for that little stuff, the rest is still too good. Also on the baseplates, I don't off hand know of anyone who does plastic chroming, mine have deteriated too bad to be a candidate for that.
Jerry - I will try to check around here this weekend. May make it out to a salvage yard with some older stuff. I haven't been there in a while and need to get by there to see if anything new has come in. Thanks
Patton, thanks, I'm also planning a trip to a junkyard in the near future. About a hour and a half to two hour drive, but from what I'm told this place hasn't sent a car to the crusher sence the early '60s.
I was just on ebay, there is a set for $25, says they are 16" ones. Not sure right off hand but I think those are the short ones right? Also, I didn't see ones from the guy who is reproing them. Hope he comes back, was looking at buying a set later on.
post a link--the LONG ONES ARE 16" approx. The shorter ones everyone refers to as 12" or so. If they have the ribbed alum inserts then IMO they have to be the longer ones.
I took the plunge and bought a set of those alum repros. $175 shipped if you do the BIN option. It's hard to tell in the pictures, but it appears that he has ribs cut into the section behind the door handle. I'll report on them when they arrive. His feedback comments on prior sales of these were very complimentary.
David, thanks for taking the plunge. let us know the quality. I seen the BIN on them and wondered who. I was wondering how they mount. The original ones use the push on clips that you cannot get off without braking the clip or the base part or that has been my track record. I cut the clip on the good base plates and then brake the tang on the no good one and then I have clips to put on the good ones, the problem I do not have any real good one. Thanks Bill.
This will be new territory for me, I've never removed the original baseplates on my car. But they look like cr*p.
