Car craft (because it's really low in price for a nice magazine). I'll pick up a copy of just about any magazine as long as it's not import orientated/90% ads (most mustang mags).

I think hot rod stole matt king away from car craft and now he's mixing it up over there.

car and driver??? keeps ya up to date on new stuff, well written. After a few years, the old car mags all look the same, same articles, same cars, same mods, etc. gets tiring.

I have a subscription to that magazine, its pretty good, except for Stephen Kim. That guy is a d*** with fingers. It seems he cannot write an article w/o insulting someone . Although they have David Freiburger to even it out. Overall a good read for cheap.

If you search back to my "get it free" post, there's a "get a free year subscription" to car&driver. I started getting it last month.

    Hemmings is the Best!

I read 10 to 12 mags a month, but by far Hemming's Muscle Machines is the best. It's not full of "paid ads" like Hot Rod, Car Craft, etc. Maybe I'm just old school, but most of the mags now leave me very disappointed. I didn't realize it until a few years ago(have a friend in the industry) but the articles in these mags. are actually paid ads for the companies. You send them the parts and pay them big bucks to do "an article on your stuff". Not the Hot Rod I read as a kid in the early 60's. Also many of the TV shows are the same way. You pay by the seconds that they expose your parts.

I get the following magazines in the mail:

    Car Craft
    Hemmings Muscle Machines
    Musclecar Enthusiast
    GM Hi-Tech Peformance
Journey With Olds (Newsletter of The Oldsmobile Club of America)

And from time to time I pick up Hot rod & High Peformance Pontiac

    Hot Rod

I agree - Hot Rod's new format and new focus on traditional rods, history, and musclecars are a huge improvement. I subscribe along with Car Craft - the hillbilly version of Hot Rod.

I also get Motor Trend for free somehow through work. I can't afford anything they have featured, but it's semi-interesting anyway.

I wish Cliff Gromer and Tony deFeo were still writing for car mags. They were my favorites! (Cars Illustrated, Street and Strip Supercars, and I think they worked on Musclecars too)

I hear Tony DeFeo writes from Drag Racing magazine.................I do remember when they street raced (i.e. road tested) the 86 Buick T-type on the streets of Newark, NJ where street racing is still alive and well today!!!

I remember reading all the articles you guys just refferred to. I still have the one where they tested the "gun metal gray" T type. I then bought my new GN in Nov of 86. Hey remember the responses to letters to ED titled "Eraserhead" and "Son on an eraserhead."

Today for me its Popular Hot Rodding in part because of their long term ongoing commitment to covering BOP. Also Car Craft for the fact that they cover more cheap do-able projects that will be somewhat duplicated by the red necks of America.
I am not familiar with Hemmings Muscle Machines. I'll have to look for it.

I wish their was a magazine that had more detail in their build ups and build ups that are affordable but not another sbc. By detail I mean like how they arrived at what compression and why. Such as to get into X range for quench and to work with 87 or 93 or what ever. Like this piston is this far down the hole on a stock rod with this cc dish so we decked the block to X to get it to zero deck or whatever. And because we used unmilled or milled heads this left us with X cc combustion chambers. This combined with a X part # compressed gasket left us with a thickness of X to put our compression and quench where we wanted. All number and formulas or links with custom calculators for this. Maybe it is to sophisticated for many audiences but their ought to be at least one magazine that could be for those of us who would like to learn how to build what and why.

Their is that Engines mag but even it does not do this like the magazines from the 60s did. Their is I think it is Super Rodder or something that has had some articles with more of these types of details. But its like maybe one article stretched over a couple issues.

I remember that well.................I forgot there was another writer for that magazine..................Neil VanOppre (?) I heard he writes for MuscleMustangs&FastFords now............I believe the publishing companyof that magazine was the little company that also brought High Performance Pontiac & GM High-Tech Performance as well...........it was based out of Saddle Brook, NJ
