What is the best body filler to use on the outside quarter areas. I have to use some on my 69 gs above the rear wheel areas, about 1/8 of an inch. With tire shake and burn outs in the future, ill need the best
The All-metal is TOUGH stuff, but I wouldn't recommend it for large areas. Go with a good lightweight filler. Much easier to sand! Evercoat makes a line of quality fillers. Others should be chiming in with current recommendations....
3m platinum, the best out there, ive used them all. They have a "platinum plus" stay away from it and get the original platinum #01171
I'm a big fan of Evercoat rage gold. If it's a deep recess or long indentation, some fiberglass filler is a good start. As for the All-metal, it's very strong but Really tough to sand and it's so rigid, I'd be concerned with it cracking down the road. Jon
Yeah its above the rear quarter fender lip, it has had a patch welded in but, some minor warpage during the process, its all 1/8 or less in depth. Should I start with a fiberglass filler, then top coat with a metal filler?
No real need to . The new filler just needs good 36 or 24 grit to adhere . Apply it just in the lowest area first then once you get reasonably level start stretching it out then finish sand with 60 or 80 and do the final coat or two with metal glaze ultra or Dolphin glaze
Rage extreme gold is a really good filler. The top it off with some glaze and you should be good. If it is deep, metal work should be done, i.e. With body hammers. Kitty hair or rather fiberglass reinforced filler can be used is some areas.
Its at the center of the fender well starting about one inch above where the stainless trim would mount, can not get a body hammer and dolly behind it
Post a picture and lets take a look , if you feel like fighting the inner fender you can metal work it out and not use any filler , thats the good thing about the steel on these old cars you can push it a little high and grind it flat
Just make sure you have it welded solid no pinholes or you'll be doing this again soon. Grind it with a fresh 24grit disc and push the filler in good and tight . Waterproof the back side as best you can also. When I do metal patches I do spread out tacks and grind and work the metal as I go breaks the monotony of the welding ,allows it to cool and just makes for a better repair in general
I will try to upload more and better pic angles for you to see, there is more welding done after this one. l did try and slide pull the panel out,but it would not move anymore.
