Bring the new pure stocker or not? NOW WITH PICS!

We've got this friend(Jeff) who came to Stanton with us last year for the first time. And after two days of racing he was hooked.. On the way home he make's the remark that he would like to find a car to do. It had to be an Olds and it had to be a 4sp :3gears:So the nationwide search began. After many calls and emails and pictures he located a car in Wadsworth Ohio.About twenty minutes from his house. The guy was going through a divorce and needed to sell. Jeff goes to look at the car and can't believe what he's found. A 1971 442 w30 4speed hardtop. One of 247 made in that year. The car looks real good from thirty feet, but could use a general resto. The car runs very well and everything works. There are very few things that are not correct with car HEI,radio etc. My point to this post is that he thinks it's not nice enough to bring, that all the cars at Stanton are show cars. I say he full of it and should run the car this year and have fun with it. The car is Silver with black stripes and a black interior.Could everyone please encourage him to bring it.After a couple of days I'm going to email him this post. See you in a few weeks. Thanks Noel

Wow, nice to hear someone thinks my car is a "show car." It's a wonderful and gracious compliment. Bzzzzzzzz! I don't think so! There are certainly museum quality examples that attend, but there are also a fair number of "20 footers" that race just as hard. Look at it this way, the cars that are not frame-offs need not worry about rubber build-up on the quarter panels! Make it legal and go. :TU:

Ask him if that car has a big H coded on the lower LH corner of each cylinder head. There's big, big, $$$$$ if it does. Big $$$ Olds heads are D's, F's, and H's.

    Hey Jeff...

are you kiddin' or what? I'd luv to show up with a ragged survivor with a killer powertrain.
I think that would be the coolest! Anyone can open their wallet and do a resto.......the trick is finding the one with "patina" that runs like a scalded cat.

Bring it and run the wheels off of it!

He should bring it. If he starts a resto on it, the car will be out of commission for a long time.

Bring it first, *then* decide what direction he wants to take with the restoration...that way, he's got all the bugs worked out of it and won't have to worry about knocking all the new paint off when he's tuning!!!!

I dont know if anyone remembers this car, but it was a tealish blue 71 lemans witha 455 and an automatic on the column, the body seemed pretty straight, but the paint was sand paper, no gloss left to it, the dashpad was cracked, but this car ran 12's, he outran the sublimegreen superbird. it doesnt matter what the carlooks like jsut as long as it runs, so bring it olut and flog on it for a weekend :TU:

There are guidlines in the rules regarding a cars condition. They are not too strict about them but you might want to read them anyway.

Kirk had a Cuda with a Braille paint job for several years!

My '61 Vette was a 20 footer too!

Unless it's got holes and primer........run it!

I only saw one hole. About 1/2 the diameter of a golf ball.

My Ramrod has one hole the size of a softball and 4 more little ones....big one's been there since 1972 when it broke through and the car was rejected for excessive rust because of that in Pa. inspection in 1975 and had to be bondo'ed and rattle canned to legally drive it. .....and it was on TV and a coupla magazines last year just as it is and has been for 30 years.

Multi colored cars don't get it, but if it looks OK from the grandstand, go for it. Like so many of the posts above, the racers themselves don't seem to mind a few blems here and there on an original survivor car.

Some cars, though, are just plain Butt ugly or too fast and must be mint to offset that. They have a super secret set of rules (discussed in private amongst the ruling council) and are only brought out if your car is faster than theirs to maintain the pecking order.

All Mercuries, for example, must be 100 point show cars, Bloomington Gold, or at least Barrett-Jackson quality...Rules are rules.     On those cars, hose clamp orientation, cotter pin bending, air pressure balance (also lab test of air quality in the tires is a must to ensure it has air that's representative of the environment in the year and locale where the car was built when new. These will be checked at tech and must be corrected if found to be incorrect.

    Hey Noel
Does the car look anything like this?
Jeff has ask me to post pics so we can all see just how bad this rouge looks and man let me tell ya it is rough! After reviewing the pics I still think he is nuts! The passangers door is not the same color and no shine left :Dou: And a little dough in the quarters, chipped paint on the hood, and a hint of rust by the wheel well moldings :puzzled: !
I told him I would give him $2000.00 for it the way it sits just to end his misery and I would take it to Stanton :Brow: but for some reason he did not think that was enough for the car ! So please help me out and tell him what a peice this thing is so I can buy it cheap and go racing! :3gears:
