You don't need to put the cover back on. Just put the balancer bolt back in without the balancer. See that dot on the top gear? Turn it so it is facing down. At that point, the dot on the crank gear should be facing it. If so, nothing has slipped. Just reinstall the new gears and chain so the dots face each other.
Copy! Thank you guys again I wish I can go to the bar and buy all you guys a round of beer and tequila shots
I stuck a rod in the number one cylinder on the compression stroke and made sure the valves were closed. The rod is all the way out and I can see the head through the spark plug hole so I’m almost positive thats TDC
When those 2 dots face each other, you are at TDC. Just make sure you put the distributor in on the compression stroke.
No problem at all. I’m literally tellin my wife right now how much help all of you are, so at this point UPS is supposed to deliver the timing set today or possibly Monday. But in the mean time I have done the cleaning with mineral spirits of the oil pan and the hole I will be scraping off old gasket and spraying brake cleaner to get everything ready for replacement. I will look into the gear for the distributor as I go about my days down possibly replacing it since I’m in there like Craig said. So at this point it’s remove gears and chain and replace them with the dots matching and replace timing set seal everything up and I’m good to go?
Yes, turn your top gear so the dot faces down and see how it matches up with the lower gear. The dots should face each other. That should be TDC.
Larry, I posted a picture up of the gears and I think those are the dots you’re talkin about. Am I right?
Mark, don’t scare me lol it wiggles a lot. If the engine doesn’t run because of something else then quite frankly I cannot afford it right now.
Jimmy, No fear. Worry is wasted energy. Your a detective, one thing at a time. Start, work and finish one thing at a time.
Tight chain & new gearset will be great. Just wondering, cause car sat, if the distributor mechanical or vacuum advance might be stuck or hungup? Larry is the distributor guru...
So when I first had this issue I ordered a new distributor that comes with the vacuum advance. Like the canister if that’s what you’re asking? On a side note I began to look into what can cause the issue of no start a few weeks ago and replaced ignition coil but I saw many people talking about a ballast resistor I went to several auto shops and they could not find anything about a ballast resistor for 69 skylark so I dug a little more and people said Buick went away with the resistor and added a resistance wire is that correct? So I believe my car has the wire but I would also like to know what is this piece is called. I will post a picture and circle it. It looks like a resistor/relay
