Even though you stated the battery connections were clean and tight, you can still try turning on the headlights, loosening the negative cable and just rotate it a little (on the battery) and see if the lights pop on. Then try the same with the positive cable. It’s a free try and I have had that happen a few times.

Before you replace the fusible link you ought to find out what caused it to fail first. Something is shorted to ground. I'd wire in a maxi fuse in the meantime and do some investigating.

Run a 12 ga. jumper (with an in line fuse) from the + battery post to the AUX. solenoid post where the two fusible links are located. If the system livens up, that's going to take that part out of the equation. If the fuse blows go from there.

    Thanks for the great info.

I am going to chase down the ground circuit first.

As stated here many, many times - look for the obvious/esy, then proceed from there.

Where do I buy a correct negative battery cable for the 72 GS 455?

    Can't seem to find one....will a 1971 version fit?

Correct? You mean Concourse correct? Lectric Ltd,

If you just want a replacement, any parts stores will have them. The variables are Gauge, Length, Terminal style (side or top mount), and whether they have additional leads or not.

    Larry,

Where does the short lead connect to?

My cable does not have that on it.

Then buy a cable without one. Not all battery cables have one. Or, just leave it disconnected.

    Hey Paul

You said you tested the battery and it has 12.5 volts. Did you check it for amperage? Sounds like an amperage problem to me.

Also, see if the trunk light comes on. It is a very small drain, so even with a next to dead battery, it should come on. It may help eliminate some of the other issues you are checking.

Before throwing money at it buying different parts, have the battery properly tested. Even though the battery was new last fall, they have been known to fail.

    Just my 2 cents

Have you tried to give it a boost? Boost pack, jumper cables? Try another battery?

Here is where I am.....There WAS clicking from the starter and headlights working, trunk light and interior lights working.

Now, nothing works at all....no lights, no clicking, no nothing.

Tried charging the battery and using the boost feature - no change. Battery shows 12.7 volts at rest.

So, it has to be one of the following

    1. Bad battery ground
    2. Bulkhead connection
    3. Fusible links

That is where I am going next.

No head lights,no start,it has to be the fusible link.If the battery is low,you will still have enough electricity to have some lights at the dash and the trunk.Bruno.

Bruno, I think you are right.

The weather here in Mass. has been super cold, so I need t get a decent day to check the fusible links.

On my 70 442, there are on top of the drivers side fender.

Buick decided to put them under the car......:(
