Hi, my 1971 GS in lime mist is in need of a good respray someday soon. Originally a Cortez gold car with a black vinyl top and a saddle interior I was thinking to go down another route than going by the green again. It`s been applied sometime in the 80ties (I`d like to know what the owner was thinking back then: "Oh, that gold color sucks, let`s redo it in...green"???)). As I don`t really want to change out the saddle interior I feel there are colors more suitable in combination with it than others. I`m really a big big fan of the Aquamist blue, also a little darker blue might be ok for me...but then, what do you think, how does that work with the saddle interior? Sure, I could go down the copper or brown route, even thought about respraying it in gold...but then, more of that antique/harvest variety... What combinations would you guys recommend with the saddle interior? Jens
Saddle goes with a lot of different colors. The diplomat blue, you mentioned, black, red, white, and of course brown.

That bamboo...I was about to dismiss it as "no way", but instead I have to say, it`s working quite good with the interior....not bad! Red, really? Like that light, firey red` or like a dark variety, like a boreaux red? Black...hmm, too many black vintage cars, unfortunatly, because I`m pretty sure it look gorgeous. I`ve seen a Chevelle once, black with black vinyl tp, looked stunning. What about the Auqamist, what`d you say? Silver would also work good with the saddle tone, don`t you think so? But then again, so many modern silver cars, you can`t get away from them on the parking lot. Jens
Changing colors is a big undertaking if done right. The saddle interior in my opinion should be left with an earth-tone scheme. Being in Europe, closely look at some of the auto exotica paint colors. Is it Porsche that has a super deep dark red metallic? Go window shopping at some dealers, but make sure you bring the wife... Mine HATES green LOL... ws My '71 was burnished cinnamon with a ivory interior and no vinyl top. ws
Haha, yeah, right, I was thinking about some Plum Crazy, too . Absolutley right, staying within the wife's color-range is a necessary thing to do. That cinnamon looks great, by the way. Are these Buick SuperSport wheels, 14 inchers on it? The wife's super-supportive to my hobby but e.g. a second gen Firebird with a screaming chicken decal will not become a reality anytime soon dir me(unfortunatly)....there're just some lines that won't be crossed by her. Same goes for the color. I've also thought about going back to the original Cortez gold...but it's just too yellow-ish for my taste.
I've got a Bamboo 70 with a brown interior, brown top. At first I reacted the same to the color combo, but I actually liked it first time I saw it. If you're insistent on keeping the interior the same, and want a change on the exterior, I think Bamboo is a good color to go with. As to your car? I'm a purist so I think stock is the way to go. I'd go back to gold.
Cortez gold can look great IMO. I don’t recall who’s car this is but I saved it since it looked so good.
Ya know pal, I owned that 1971 in 1973 and put BF Goodrich radial T/As on the back but dont remember the size. I think they were 14s though... I too loved those rally wheels! That gold one above is sweet, but too much sag in the front. Id also nix the vinyl top; its a water holder and a distraction from the smooth Buick lines with a killer paint job. Antique cars had vinyl tops and wood frames underneath; you can imagine where that went... Here is this years model LOL... ws
That's the direction I went with mine, car had perf Dark Saddle interior, didn't want red already had a red one couple years prior, my pop has a black one, I have white 70 X. I almost went the original code 48 Forest Green, or Diplomat blue, but it just didn't look like I had thought it would against the brown , the dark green looks good , and stratomist looks really good on dark saddle, Jason Line's convertible is proof of that. If you wanted a more modern look, a dark burgundy or something like code RR off the new fords would be gorgeous
I’d like to see what saddle looks like, cuz I disagree with this statement. Beige in general looks awesome with a darker red, and I’ve seen several cherry reds (think 1970) with a beige interior. Goes well with dark green and, honestly, is one of the more flexible colors aside of black or white. When you wear khaki pants, do you have problems matching them?
Whenever I see a classic car with an earthy color interior and a non earthy exterior I think ‘repaint’. I imagine the car was cream/tan/gold/brown and the owner didn’t want to spend the time and money changing the interior too, so a compromise was picked. It’s your car, but I say embrace the earth tones, go original with high quality paint and revel in the glory of the time it represents. Yay gold! Patrick
Hey Bill, Little froggy out there, was that pic snapped at the Adler Planetarium in the early AM? Looks kinda familiar. As far as the color change, I would go back to the original gold if it were mine. That color pops when done correctly.
So I feel a slight tendency towards the earthly tones ...you guys are right, I know. That "back to gold" is not out of question, and the pic of the golden Skylark(not Cortez, though, am I right? Looks more sombre, like a harvest/antique gold). But that blue...stratomist, you say, hmm? BTW, beautiful White GSX there...wow! Here (once again, posted it a million times, I guess) the GS in it`s nearly brand new condition...have the photo from the original owner, he said it must have been taken about 2 weeks after he bought it new. Yeah Nick, that was an all nighter, cruisin', makin' out and watching the sun come up at the Planetarium after a spin up to the Baha'i Temple in Wilmette, followed by a 0900hrs trip to the top of the 3 year old Sears Tower. It was in the clouds and couldnt see anything , but we seen it all the night before; us and the DOORS and Jimi Hendrix LOL... Remember that one like it was yesterday! As Im sure youre aware, that whole trip is changed now. ws
I've always felt that when changing a body color, it makes more sense to go with a color that was available for the year of car in question rather than a fad color that will eventually go away and render the car worth considerably less money. In cases like this were you have several years of the same body style, you have the option of going with a color from the `70 thru `72 model years without disrupting the overall appearance of the car. We all have different tastes in cars and colors but my choice for your car would be the `70 Sherwood Green. I think it would be stunning with the saddle interior. I would also go as far as removing the vinyl top and going all one color. Just my opinion.
