I have to buy a A/C belt for my 70GS455, where can I get a correct appearing belt?
If I am going to buy one I might as well pay a little extra and get the right one if they are available.

If I recall correctly that is a NOS only item.

It is true that the originals did not have the saw tooth cut on the bottom side. I have a NOS one on the stage one convert. Very difficult item to locate.

    Cant wait to see it

I look forward to some pictures of that belt(on that car) who knows I might even get to see it at on of the events in 07.

    Here ya' go Bert..

This was one of the hardest parts to find, and one of the most expensive, in relation to what a replacement belt costs.

    And on the car..

We have to recall that the belts in this time period were cloth covered, unlike the all rubber belts out there now. There is a supplier redoing belts of this type, but they don't make this size, which is 7/16x65" for a STG 1 455 in 1970..

Here's some info to help you locate one:

    Group number - 1.066

    PN: 1387173 (STG 1) 7/16 x 65

    PN: 1381471 (GS 455)- 1/2 x 63.5

Dayco made notchless belts a few years ago but I think all they make now is those ugly top cogs. Goodyears and Gates are both bottom notches. Good luck finding NOS.

    Not the same belt?

Thanks Jim, that picture of the belt on the car helped me.

I did not realize that a GS455 and a Stage1 car did not have the same belt?
    Thanks again.

Those pics are of our stage one triple black convert. The larger pulley on the AC compressor for stage one cars meant the belt had to cover more distance --thus the bigger belt for the stage one AC cars.

Jim, I believe all GS 455's with posi rear ends had the bigger AC pulley and therefore the bigger belt. I do not think it is Stage-1 specific.

That could be. I went to a presentation made by Dennis Manner in 2003 and I recall him saying that was a stage one specific mod to keep from over reving the AC compressor.

Jim, I have seen these pulleys on almost all base GS 455's as well as Stage-1's from 70-72 that still had the original compressor. If you check out the 70 Assembly manual page #6-5.2 it shows belt usage for multiple vehicles with this belt with performance axle and does not mention Stage-1. It also shows big pulley compressor(5910725) was used on series 46,94,60,64,66 and 82 cars with optional axle ratio. It is more common than you think.

Big pulley and single trac rear

My car has the larger pulley and it originally had a single trac 8.2 with the 2:93 gears.
Perhaps the larger pulley on the compressor came with the HD cooling package on the GS455?

Thanks again for the pictures, they help. For instance I was able to verify the bolts I have on my AC brackets are correct...

Interesting. Duane says it was rear gear ratio dependent so of course stage ones would have had them.

I don't mean to get off subject, but since you guys are talking about it, does anyone know where I could get one of the larger diam. air compr. pulleys by it's self or with a compressor? I am building a '71 stage one air car and I think this car would have had one on it originally. Thanks

When I replaced the A6 on my car a few years back Autozone could get them with the big pully it just took a couple of days. I had things torn apart so I just bought the small pully compressor and swapped the pulley over. I don't recommend doing this unless you have done it before. I hadn't seen the clutch/pully assembly taken apart since I was in school back in 92! (feeling old)

    regards
