i went to the track saturday to see how the new motor would run and i was a bit disappointed in the ET and the speed of the car . here's the combo 40 over 455 je flat tops 11-1 aluminum stage 1 heads port matched SP1, MSD ignition electric fuel pump , 342 gears 2000 stall " i know it needs more stall " 870 holley carb "i know it needs more carb" lol the cam is TAs 210s HL 245/255 110 lc . slicks . now it was hot out like 85 degrees ,and the best run was 12.1 at 113 mph the car is about 3500 lbs never had it scaled .what do you guys think?

I think it sounds good. You get the higher stall and if your willing to go to 373's, I think it will help you et's a bit. What was your 60 ft?

i know its not that bad , but i was hoping for more after all the work i put into it .my best 60 foot was a 1.68 which is pretty good for the converter and the gears im running. im going to go to a 1050 dominator and a 3000 stall and i might just put the 373 s back in , but i like the way the car cruises with the 342 . i drive it to the track . mike

    How tall are those slicks?

What size tire do you run on it when you drive it around?

the slicks are 28- 10.5 -15 i drive to the track on them with about 30 psi in them . mike

I would say the carb and stall along with the 373's would do what you want. Your right , though, those 342's are nice on the hwy. I have the same thing running around in my head. I have a 373 gear ready to put in mine, but I probably would hate the car then since I drive it on the road often. Running at the track with it is in the future, but I will probably stick with the 342's. You need the stall, and you have the carb., so install and post the new times. Love to see them.

I used to run that cam, I loved it. As a matter of fact I still have it on the shelf as a back-up. Back then my combo consisted of: 210s cam, Carb Shop 850 (flowed 990), TA intake, iron heads (flowed 270/205), 11.5:1 comp., ATI 10" (flashed to 3900) and both 3.73 & 4.10 gears. The car weighed 3850 w/ driver and ran about the same with either gear. The best that combo went was an 11.61 at about 115-116. I ran that combo for about 5 years so it was well tuned in. The best it ran first time out was 12.25, so just remember it'll take awhile to get dialed in. I think your going down the right path with converter, gear and carb. Good Luck

I think those are pretty good numbers for the gear/converter you have and it's your first time out with the car. Look at it this way, You're almost in the 11's with a 3.42 gear, 2000 stall converter, full weigth GS, in the summer heat. A few trips to the track to fine tune it, and a cool fall day will get you solidly in the 11's. When I take a new combo to the track the first time I write the trip off as a "starting piont" Then I really know where I'm at and what needs worked on. Keep at it.

    Have fun.

You have a good starting point there. If you make changes, I would do one at a time, not all at once. Did you try any timing changes? What is the timing at? Are the heads ported?
WHat scecndary spring is in that 870 holley? If it's the stock spring, that could be a big problem, carb not opening up all the way. What were you shifting at?
I agree you could use some more converter.
I don't think I would change gears yet, I doubt they will give you maybe a tenth. Jim Burek

GOOD START, if you are going to keep the gears i would go to a 26'' slick, i run a 27'' with 373's and only see just over 5000 threw the lights. if you dont have a switch pitch i would stay with the 2000 stall, you wont injoy cruiseing
with the 3000 ,with those gears. also i have read that the SP1 needs 355 gears or it will hurt your E.T. in my opion i would go to a dual plane intake and a 26'' slick, maybe a 27 if you have traction problems. and i think you would see 2-3 tenths improvment, ITS ALL IN THE COMBO. just my 2 cents

cray1801 Too much is just right.

This is respectable for your first time out. I know I expected more my first time as well. My first time out was a 13.2 now I run 12.7 with no changes, just more seat time.

I noticed your underdrive pulleys, how is your temp. during city driving (if you do any). I ask because I just replaced my underdrive water pump pulley (same as yours) with a stock diameter pulley...much cooler than before in traffic.

i noticed your rear squats alot, maybe you need airbags?? one on the pass. side, at least it will keep the spring from wearing out.

Before spending money and throwing parts at it, think of this:

Last Labor Day BOP Weekend my Riv ran 14.40 on Saturday in 90* heat with 90% humidity. Saturday night a cold front pushed through and dumped a monsoon on us.

Sunday was 75* and dry. The Riv ran 13.8. 6/10ths just from weather!!!!!!!

So that should be kept in mind.

I'm not a big fan of vacuum operated carbs. A 1000 Race Demon will pick up some top end and better 60s.

That's a really nice cam but the converter is a mismatch which will cost several tenths.

I'd make these two changes then play with the tune. I think you've got some low 11s in it.

hey guys thanks for the replys , jim the timing is at 30 degrees total . youre right about that carb its a great street carb but for the track it just isnt enough , the car was getting out of the hole pretty good but is wasnt pulling on the top end like it should i had a spring kit and i changed the springs like three times . i was shifting at 5800 to 6000 rpms the cam is supposed to be good from 3 to 6 . by the way its to late to not order the parts they'll be here in 2 days i got a 1050 dominator and a 3000 stall converter . "just couldnt help myself this stuff is like a drug only better"! im going to stay with the 342 gears for now . jim the intake was port matched to the heads the chambers worked and polished and i opened up the exhaust ports a little and got a good 3 angle valve job .mike

by the way the temp with the underdrive pulleys did go up a little but im running an electric fan and a aluminum rad and it never goes over 190 even in this heat.mike
