Insipered by the other thread, just spectating, I wondered does your car see the rain? A lot of classic car owners will eave a show if it looks like rain, some won't even come out. I was wondering what everybody is like here. As a rule, If it's just a cruise night, driving for the hell of it, I won't start out if it's raining, Cloudy is okay If once I'm out, it starts raining, ohh well. If it's a really special event I'll go out in the rain. The main reason I don't like going out in the rain is bad wipers. I know my car won't melt!
If its raining, I won't take the GS. If I'm out and about and it starts to rain, no big deal. Worn out drag radials and rain don't mix well. Neither does 1/2 inch of dust and a little drizzle.
Try not to get them wet, but it happens. As a matter of fact, I drove the convertible to work today (it was 80+ and sunny yesterday) and caught a few drops on the way in. I just sped up so I wouldn't get the inside wet. I have been caught at a few shows in the rain, now I carry a California water blade and a couple of extra towels. I usually won't drive either if it is raining when I am leaving. That being said, two winters ago I had car trouble with the GN, and drove the convertible for a week in the rain until I found a more suitable daily driver. Chris
Mine can see the rain from a warm dry garage. Once I have a car restored and detailed I wont drive it if it looks bad outside. The only one that has been in rain is my GN, last year on the way home from the Buick Nationals in Flint we hit heavy rains. Pulled into an outlet mall and shopped for a few hours untill the storm passed. Spent 2 days cleaning the car, so it's just not worth it. Mark
My GS has seen plenty of rain....none of it intentional though If Im out in it...and it rains.....it gets wet. I wont take it out if Im just putzing around for the day and its raining I have been caught in quite a few heavy storms over 11 years like driving all the way (17 hrs) to Bowling Green in what seemed like a Monsoon No big deal - its a car and its 35 years old. ....its happened before plenty of times in its life and it hasn't melted yet On another note - I did take it out a bit too early this late winter / early spring. Beautiful day and The roads were perfectly clear when I left ... mid day sun melted the plowed snow on the side of the highway and made the exit ramps a bit wet.... .....but when I went home about an hour after sundown those wet spots had re-frozen !! :eek2: :eek2: Scared the crap out of me twice in 5 minutes
Are you kidding me? With a gallon of Bondo in the quarterpanels I don't even WASH it. Just hit it with the clay bar and detailer spray and wax. I got caught in the rain ONCE in 5 years, and it was a DELUGE!
I don't take the car out if it's already raining, or if the chance of rain, especially thunderstorms, is high. Up here, thunderstorms in the summer can translate into hail... But if I'm already out driving, I don't let a little rain bother me much.
I guess I'm the one that inspired this thread, since I mentioned to 69GS400's that I didn't like driving my car in the rain. That's really the only thing that bothers me about driving to Salem. I'm hoping that the weather cooperates. I don't mind if the car gets wet, I just don't like driving my frame off GS in the rain. I have my MSD Digital 6 in the cowl. Everything is sealed, and it's mounted off the floor of the cowl (with the rubber mounts), but I still worry. Add to that, the vinyl roof(we all know how water gets under the roof and mouldings), and the inattentive morons out there talking on there cell phones instead of paying attention to their driving, :af: :blast: Maybe I worry too much, and it keeps me from enjoying my GS as much as I could. Last year at Buick Performance weekend, it came down in buckets on the way home. The car ran fine all the way home with the A/C on, but it got pretty dirty. I don't worry about it mechanically, I could drive this car anywhere. The cooling system is great(rarely see even 185), it's quiet until you lean on it, and it gets something resembling mileage. I'm looking foward to driving it to Salem.
My car is on the road from May to October. If it rains, the car gets wet. Cleaning the engine every couple of weeks is a drag, but that's the price I pay for a driver
NOOOOOOOOOOO-------------WAAAAAAAAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!                :bglasses: MOON' :bglasses:
i will not take my gs out if it raining or threatening rain . have left one car show a year ago because rain was imminent . the car has been heavily rained on twice , but the simoniz shammy makes quick removal of the water . only wash the car if it has been weeped on from some trees and before i winter store it .
Only if the garage door is open  No rain here, if theres a chance of rain, has rained in the last 4-5 hours she stays in the garage.....now if I'm out of town to a show and get caught in the rain then ol well, last year I took my Camaro to Tenn and got hit by a hail storm, had the car done 3 weeks, and had to pretty much re-due the body, sucks but thats just the way it is, PDR worked on some of it and the rest was beyond there talents.
Well since I'm in the process of tearing the car down, I'm finding all those rust holes that are killing the interior. So when the car is not being worked on, it's parked with plastic sheets under a car cover. I only drive it when the chance of rain is less than 20%. HOPEFULLY, I'll have this baby to the body shop in September. Wish me luck!!!
Weeeelll.... Now that you mention it, mine has been out of the garage for about 2 weeks now. Garage has become my temporary woodshop/trim painting/cabinet manufacturing shop until the basement finishing project is done. It's rained a couple of times this week, and I had some nasty water spots to scrub off after I left it in range of the sprinklers last Friday. I got rained on hard on the way back from Norwalk this year. I also drove through a gullywasher to race one day last summer. I don't worry about rain too much. Keep a good coat of wax on it, and I use the air hose to blast the water out from under the trim and around the back window after I wash it. I think that the major damage would be driving it on our notoriously salty Michigan winter roads or leaving it to bake in the sun. Ultraviolet is way worse for the car than rain (unless it's acid rain).
Mine never get wet None of my cars ever get wet. I don't even wash them. They never go out except on nice days. I have had my conv. almost 10 years and it has never been washed. They are much less likely to develope any rust if they never get wet. Also, I almost never have to detail the underside this way. Just a little quick detailer after I drive them and a wax job every few months. Lots of people ask me who painted my red conv. and when I tell them the paint is 10 years old, they can't believe it. That's why it stays dry. Randy
How can it get wet when it sits inside a garage under a cover that beads water off it. o No:
HERE HERE CHRIS :beer I just dont clean the engine... maybe one day every day i drive this car also May thru October. and we both even have convertibles... Nate
