    Hi Folks

    Here's the specs:

    71 GS with stock hood
    TA STG 1 TE heads
    SP-2 intake
    Holley carb- 4150 style

Who has this setup, and has a PN for the base or the whole air cleaner assembly, that they know for sure fits under the stock hood.

    Thanks

    JW

Doesn't someone have the corvette L88 base with this setup?

I believe that to be the case but I can't seem to find it using the search feature.I'm almost positive that someone posted pulling this off with the SPX but I don't think that it was with the AL heads or a 4150.In any case, this is the base referenced

Altough this one may end up going for big money if it's an original, the bases are reproduced and will fit Q-jets and 4160 Holleys for what I have used them and can attest to,you can buy them from ebay for about $40.00+.I know that this info don't help in your specific quest for propper fitment but the customer may want to take a chance for $40.00+ and try to make it work. The repros come equipped with a tube for the chevy application that I have removed and patched the orifice to make them work on my engines.Just a thought.

    Here's the repro

The problem I find is a setup will work on one car and not on another. Our cars are around 40 years old now. Different motor mounts, old body bushings etc has made them all different. I would bet there can be up to an inch difference in the clearances.

Any one know how to make something to help measure underhood clearance?

    Jim,
If you want that Corvette style base you can have the one I have. Did not work for me.

    Jim,
I have a pretty big drop base air cleaner (either 1 1/2 or 2"), The SP1, and Q-jet, and I have maybe 1/8" left. It barely makes it. Considering the SP2 is a 1/2" taller, I'm not sure it's even possible, unless you go to a 2" element.

Ya Larry, that's what I am worried about..

I'm in this deal after the fact so to speak, trying to make a silk purse out of what was sent to me, and cover all the bases for my overseas customer. One concern I had when I saw the parts, and then the picture of his car, was "how are we going to fit that under the hood with an air cleaner".

Want to get as much info here as I can, because I am going to do a pull on the dyno with whatever we come up with here, that is the best hope of getting it under the hood.

I will have to compare his Proform 950 to a Q-jet, and see which one is taller. I suspect the Q-jet might be.

Doug, if you want to send that to me, I will take it, and let me know what you have in it.. if it works out for us, I can make you whole on that deal again.. and of course I will pay shipping up here, just let me know how much to paypal you..

I'll pull my air cleaner off and measure it to be sure what I have.

    OK Jim,
As near as I can measure, my base drops the bottom of the filter element 1 1/4" below the gasket surface of the Q-jet carburetor. I thought it was more than that. When I use my AED 1000 HO carburetor, this air cleaner works despite the thin adapter plate I have to use to adapt my Q-jet opening to a square bore carb. It's real close though.

JW i had to use the corvette drop base to work with the SPX with a 3" filter it leaves about 1/2 inch on top. The corvette drop base i had to cut out the vacuum tube and i had to work the bracket that holds the throttle cable .It does work. I am hoping to hit the track later next month,i had to break in the new blacktop on the driveway last week. todd:3gears:

    Todd,
The SPX is the same height as an SP1. JW is using an SP2, which is 1/2" taller. I'm not sure if the TE heads raise the intake any more than that. Hopefully, the Corvette base is more than what I have because he's going to need all the drop he can get.

I know it's not the same combination you're asking about but it's close. For the last six years with my 71 GS (stock hood) I've run a real GM drop base from a Corvette (late 60's-early 70's Holley type) with iron heads, a SP1 intake and HP 850 Holley. I use a 4" K&N filter and top with no clearance issues. The one Larry is showing is the type Summit sells and will not work with my combo. It does not have enough drop to it. I did have to modify the opening slightly for the HP Holley and remove and fill the air tube. They are now making an exact reproduction of the original Chevy drop base (on Ebay). I see no reason the extra 1/2 inch of the SP 2 will be of a concern. If you need them, I can measure or send photos. My car's frame is not bent or dropped and nothing is worn out or sagging. It's a clean, low mileage original Stg. 1 car. I used the same type drop base on my brother's 71 455 with a B4B/Holley and have lots of room.

I do not know if this will help or not. I use a KN Flow-Control drop base air cleaner with the TA intake. It is a 16 inch filter and 4 inch high. The choke horn has to be milled off the Holley though. This is supposed to be a 10 horse bolt on. I also have a 1 inch spacer under the carb. The 16 inch set up does give a little more room for the linkage. This is on the 350 engine. I know your set up is higher but you may be able to use this with a 3 or 3 1/2 inch filter.

JW it was 04 the first BPG meet.I would say that i have more than 1/2 clearance closer to 1 " .:3gears:
